In these times of global instability and uncertainty, Fifth World seeks to posit an alternative, with scenes from an optimistic future.

For December, I present a sad, hauntological winter mix, recorded after a week of thinking about grief, life, and loneliness. Therefore, this mix highlights Maya Al Khaldi’s composition on Other World (2022), inspired by Palestinian folklore and archives to imagine a sonic future, released on the womxn-led Palestinian label Tawleef. Moreover, the mix includes two tracks by Nour Sokhon on the recent album Beirut Birds (2024), ‘honoring (inter)personal stories of migration, displacement, and the cyclical turbulent circumstances in Lebanon.’ Cellist and composer CTM’s ‘For Jannis’ commemorates the late Jannis Noya Makrigiannis (1983-2022), founder of the Choir of Young Believers. Finally, Broadcast’s ethereal ‘Follow the Light’ from Spell Blanket (Collected Demos 2006 – 2009) was released thirteen years after the passing of Trish Keenan (1968-2011). In line with the included compositions, the mix is dedicated to all who departed far too soon, their time cut short yet their echoes eternal. - @minka-r
