We all remember with mixed feelings the past two years of domestic isolation: a temporary anomaly in which the world had to adjust to a new routine, a new rhythm. In these daunting yet precious circumstances, Italian producer Markeno has found his rhythm back, dusting off old records and re-approa- ching his past musical love affairs that he believed to be long forgoCen.
Here, in the fertile limbo that connects past and future, “Dock lown (exploring)” is born: a 3-tracker release with a chameleonic nature and an undeniable
groove, in which Markeno is able to tactfully combine different genres such as indie, post-rock, African music, electro and funk.
In the contemporary music scene, overly saturated with catchy melodies and seductive lyrics, it is refreshing to encounter a composition like “Fase 01”, which starts from a purely percussive structure. Just when the ear is settled and well inserted into the tangle of drums, here comes the melodic twist, no less than at the fourth minute, injecting an unexpected groove and chalking out the contours of a track with mul6ple personali6es: a liCle esoteric, a little synth-wave, quirky and badass.
The temperature rises with “Zona Rossa”, in which the electro hint sketched in “Fase 01” becomes more pronounced, opening the doors to a dense psychedelic scenario. A shamanic loop accompanies the electric bass and escorts us through the smoke of the bonfire, veils swayed by the wind and colored lights that sparkle in the night.
The ritualistic humming of ‘’Zona Rossa”’ is still hearable, floating in the rarefied atmosphere, while the last track “Limbo” makes its entrance and confirms once again the poliedric but congruous essence of this release, whose percussive attitude lures you in and whose hypnotic and groovy body makes you stay. At least for one more dance.

'Drang' (from the German, meaning impulse, push, persistence) is the new album by Stromboli (Maple Death Records, Oltrarno Recordings), the project of Bologna-based musician Nico Pasquini. Encompassing pulsating noise, propulsive percussion, as well as moments of ecstatic flight, the album depicts a post-human world of ambiguous sentience, where the distinction between humanity and simulation has become ill-defined and illusory. In this sense, 'Drang' represents a paradoxical vision of rarefied perception and indeterminate forms, vivid energy and unfamiliar resonances, bold revelation and concealed currents.

Across twelve works of experimental electronic composition, Stromboli constructs music of absorbing abstraction, emerging with a confluence of imposing industrial reverberation and otherworldly ambient on the extraordinary opener 'Stamina', before advancing into the immersive, cinematic murk of 'Aechmea' and 'Fumo negli occhi', where the album evokes semblances of esoteric krautrock, if made for the year 2050. Elsewhere the hypnotic fourth world deconstructions of 'Hellblau', 'Tropico caustico' and 'Synonyme' shift into coruscating zones of abrasive impetus, suggesting imperfect traces within technological processes, while 'Antrieb' conveys divergence through a mercurial collage of atmospheric tape loops and raw proto-techno.

Throughout these moments and beyond, 'Drang' is both heavy hitting and enigmatic, an album that strikes an artful balance between elevation and discord, foregrounding original conceptions of noise, industrial and ambient, while incorporating reframed vestiges of dub, acid, drone, and electro. This exceptional sense of counterpoint and contemporary plurality continues into the album's closing stages with 'Exochorda', which explores fragmentary incursions of cavernous, arrhythmic drums and radiant trails of ambient sound, before 'Continuo discontinuo' closes proceedings with a subtle assemblage of gentle tone float, liquid FX, and subterranean distortion, transitioning from a series of implosions to a final beautiful dissolve.

Across a melee of aerial undulations, industrial debris, and autonomous circuitry, a remarkably distinct, cohesive sound materializes on 'Drang'; a strong sense of arrangement and identity that threads these tracks together and marks the album out as one of Stromboli's finest, most arresting works to date. Unravelling compelling dissonance and transcendent flow states out of conflicting elements and impulses, Stromboli creates an environment of astounding pressure and evocative lustre, affirming that in the post-human universe of 'DRANG', there's plenty of life to be found.

Bologna’s Random Numbers unveils the ‘You Are Dreaming! (Remixes) of La Serpiente this June, featuring Elena Colombi, BXP, Big Hands, Front de Cadeaux and Wang Inc. on remix duties.

The Italian Random Numbers imprint has become synonymous with boundary breaking, left of centre sounds since 2014, launched by BXP and White Raven who regularly feature on the label, it also showcases a wide variety of experimental Italian artists and others beyond across the globe. Often embracing the resurgence of the cassette format as well as vinyl and digital. Here the label shines a light on Amsterdam via Milano artist La Serpiente aka Marco Segato who makes a welcome return to the label and has also featured his mystical, post-industrial leaning works on the likes of brokntoys, XCPT, Dionysian Mysteries and Sons Of Traders among others.

Opening this remix package of ‘You Are Dreaming!’ is the acid-laced, slowly unfurling psychedelic original, followed by Front De Cadeaux’ percussive focused rework.

Label co-founder BXP then opens the B-Side, turning in a mind-altering interpretation fuelled by modulating synth whirrs, shuffled drums and bumpy bass hits. 

The ‘Big Hands Remix’ then ups the tempo, embracing a more off-kilter Techno feel employing the originals hypnotic chimes with skippy drums and fluttering resonant licks before Elena Colombi induces a dreamy, trance like state via fluttering bells, haunting voices and elongated bass drones. 

Lastly as a digital bonus, Wang Inc. turns in the final remix, a fourteen minute tribal-tinged journey through organic rhythms, oscillating synth lines and fragments of the original composition.

The thoughts floated in and out, images danced atop an empty screen as the voices echoed and cried with great whimsy and wonder. These were the moments of wild dreams, a place in which the most careless and most reckless fantasies roamed as the limits and shackles of society were removed.

Anything might exist up here for anything could.

Wandering from room to room of the empty house, there were strange visions and moments to be found within each. Some were haunting whilst others were wildly euphoric like the stuff of a delicate fantasy.

Who knew which door might lead where and what lay behind each?

La Serpiente remixed by Elena Colombi. Now this is a combination we can get behind, this one sounds like something out of a sophisticated art noire film, a horror of sorts with wandering melodies and echoes atop a stomping repetitive kick.
