Nakamura Kusatao was born in Xiamen (China) in 1901 and moved to Japan in 1904.

He was influenced by contemporary Western philosophy, mostly Friedrich Nietzsche, and his poetry focused on themes of life and humanity. Together with Shuson Kato and Ishida Hakyo, Nakamura Kusatao was a member of the “Human Exploration School”, a group of poets who used haiku to explore and highlight "how human beings should live".

Nakamura Kusatao launched the magazine Banryoku in 1946, and his major collections include Chōshi, Hi no shima, Biden, and Toki.

"all the ways in which i am mute" is a sort of attempt at the meditation practice of tonglen. tonglen comes in different ways but it's about taking in the pain and suffering of others and giving back compassion and relief. an endeavor to try to be more outwards and amongst.

the work isn't about how to perform that practice or even claiming any growth with it but about the struggle and acknowledgement of the parts of life outside yourself and what it might mean on any given moment to open to that. it's about my failures with this as much as any success.

Disquiet Junto 0656 invites us to remix another musician's lullaby submission from last week, to transform it into something for parents. I chose Ray Cobley's "slumberscape" as the collaboration (https://soundcloud.com/ray_cobley/slumberscape-disquiet0655)

I reflected on my own early parenthood, and how much I wished that there was a manual. Well, that's how it started at least.

In 1948, Hungarian physicist and Manhattan Project scientist Leo Szilard published a short story titled “The Mark Gable Foundation”. Reminiscent of HG Wells’s _The Time Machine_, the unnamed narrator, who wanted to see what the world would be like in 300 years, arranges to be frozen, or "withdrawn from life" as the process is called, until the year 2260. However, owing to a legal dispute, he is awakened after only 90 years. He learns the facts of a strange new way of life on earth. Teeth had become unfashionable, for example. And the richest man on earth, Mark Gable, made his fortune by selling his sperm and producing millions of “donated children,” each of which earned him thousands of dollars in royalties.

Inspired by Wust I decided to create my own instrument. I used a metal fan cage and recorded through a delay to get a longer decay. I pitched down 12 and 24 unwarped so the timing offset and copied the tracks into different places in the stereo field. I lowered one down 48 and kept it in the center. Disquiet Junto Project 0260: Tone Fade
An exercise in when a sound ends.

On my piano I played a C natural 2 octaves below middle C while muting the strings with my thumb. I moved my thumb slightly between each note which brought out different harmonics. Took this track and layered it 4 times shifting the pitch up a 5th, octave and third creating a major chord. 

Amplitude modulated each of the 4 tracks with a slow sine wave (10 second cycle, 75% depth) and at 4 different phases (0, 90, 120 and 180) creating a slow cross fading between the 4 tracks. Added a bit of pitch stretched root note and some additional reversed piano sounds (opposite of fade out) for atmosphere.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
