Giti (or Gitty) Pashaei (گیتی پاشایی) [1995 - 1940] received training in classical Iranian music from masters like Faramarz Payvar (فرامرز پایور), yet the unique infusion of Western pop elements, psychedelic melodies and her bold fashion choices earned her status as a groovy queen in Persian music of the 70s. Although she continued to compose music for cinema after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, working alongside her husband and renowned filmmaker Masoud Kimiai (مسعود کیمیایی), much of her music sadly remains outside of mainstream attention as with many other artists who chose to stay in Iran after the revolution.

Manouchehr Sakhaei (منوچهر سخایی) [2011 - 1935, b. Tehran, Iran] began his professional career in the late 1950s and was among the first set of pop stars in Tehran to combine Iranian melodies with Western instruments along the likes of Viguen and Aref. Although hugely prolific in Iran, he wasn't able to achieve the same level of success after his move to LA during the 1979 revolution.

Black Cats 🐈‍⬛ is perhaps the longest-lasting group in Iranian pop music history, founded in 1960 in Tehran by Shahbal Shabpareh, and still kicking it today! Today we take a trip to their Pre-Revolution roots, a funky cover of "A-Chi-Li-Pu" originally performed by Spanish singer Dolores Vargas in 1970. The track features vocals from Shahram Shabpareh and Ebi on lead and background vocals respectively, both of whom went on to become two of Iran's biggest pop stars.

Aref - Del Midoone [70s Persian Garage Rock] عارف - دل میدونه

Elaheh's beautiful Farsi cover of the beloved theme song from the 1970 film Love Story 💘 Elaheh (real name: Bahar Gholamhosseini بهار غلامحسینی) (2007 - 1934) was mostly known for her status in the Persian Classical music world, having received training from the likes of Abdollah Davami (عبدالله دوامی). She was one of the main singers of the Golha (گل ها) program on Radio Iran, known to have performed over 700 songs over the course of her career! Elaheh spent some time in the UK and the US after the 79' revolution, eventually returning to Iran in 2007, where she spent her final days.

We present a very rare and unheard pre-revolution funky jazz tune from Iranian singer Mostafa Rostami (مصطفی رستمی) 💫 Though Rostami was known for his work within the more traditional Persian "Koocheh Bazari" genre, this B-Side was an exciting find in our search for alternative Pre-Revolution Iranian music. Not much information remains on him and we predict this release was from mid-late 1960s. Other than a low quality digital file on an internal Iranian site, this is the first time the song is shared online to our knowledge. We hope you enjoy 💛🎺

Simin Ghanem سیمین غانم‌ (born. 1944) started singing at the age of 9 and has given the Iranian music landscane unforgettable pop hits like 'Gole Goldoun' and 'Gholake Cheshat'. 'Laneyeh Moor', composed by Touraj Shabankhani is a beautiful example of Pre-Revolution Iranian artists adapting Mystic Iranian poetry into Pop-Rock music that was more familar with audiences at the time. The song features lyrics adapted from the work of 11th century Iranian poet Baba Taher (باباطاهر عریان همدانی), in the classic forms of Ruba'i (رباعی) quatrain, or four line verses. Baba Taher is one of the most revered early poets of Persian literature, born in the city of Hamedan, where his tomb lies today. He is often given the nickname "Oryan" (meaning 'The Naked'), attributed to his probable spiritual stoic lifestyle, symbolically not clothed with material and worldy belongings.

سیمین غانم (متولد ۱۳۲۳) از سن ۹ سالگی شروع به خوانندگی کرد و با آثار ماندگاری همچون «گل گلدون» و «غُلک چشات» در عرصه موسیقی پاپ ایرانی، نقش پررنگی ایفا کرد. آهنگ «لانه مور»، ساخته تورج شعبان‌خانی، نمونه‌ای زیبا از تلاش هنرمندان ایرانی قبل انقلاب برای تطبیق اشعار عرفانی ایرانی با موسیقی پاپ-راک است که در آن زمان برای مخاطبان آشناتر بود. شعر این آهنگ از آثار شاعر ایرانی قرن پنجم قمری، باباطاهر عریان همدانی، برگرفته شده‌اند، که در قالب رباعی سروده شده‌اند. باباطاهر یکی از شاعران برجسته و محبوب ادبیات فارسی اولیه است که در شهر همدان به دنیا آمده و مقبره او نیز در همدان قرار دارد. او اغلب با لقب «عریان» شناخته می‌شود که به سبک زندگی زاهدانه و روحانی او اشاره دارد.

A rare unique pysch-pop gem from the depths of Iran's 'Filmfarsi' cinema. Surely subject to controversy at the time (and perhaps even now), Tila's sensual performance and Manteghi's lyrics, are unlike anything else heard in popular Iranian music - a phenomenon even made crazier by the fact that legendary composer Anoushirvan Rohani was behind the groovy arrangement (although mysteriously, there is no composer credit listed). Tila has a few soundtrack records to her name, as well as a few funky duets alongside Zia Atabay. Not much else is known about her career. Enjoy 🍒

As a mystical figure in Iranian music and cinema, Javidan continued his activity on the sidelines, often crucified and ridiculed in popular media, as seen in the 1977 Caricature magazine featured in this video. While most of his discography was either religious or 'koocheh-bazari', "Faryade Maslool" stands out as a wild outlier with its funky rhythms, and morbid lyricism, likely a cover of "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band.

Unconfirmed sources state that due to his religious activities in the late 60s, he was forced to flee Tehran, undergoing plastic surgery and growing out his hair, taking on a new identity as a Dervish. Whether this is true or not only adds to the mystery.

‎یکی از آوانگاردترین آهنگ های تاریخ موسیقی ایران، از مصطفی جاویدان (متولد کرمانشاه، ۱۳۲۵، درگذشته ۱۳۹۶)، با نام اصلی سید مصطفی موسوی، که با عنوان درویش جاویدان هم شناخته می‌شد. جاویدان به عنوان چهره‌ای رمزآلود در موسیقی و سینمای ایران، فعالیت‌های خود را در حاشیه ادامه داد و در رسانه‌های عامه‌پسند بارها به تمسخر کشیده شد، نمونه‌اش جلد مجله کاریکاتور در سال ۱۳۵۶ که در این ویدیو دیده می‌شود
‎با اینکه بخش عمده‌ای از آثار او مذهبی یا کوچه‌بازاری بود، «فریاد مسلول» یک استثنای کامل است که در زمان خود در موسیقی ایران مشابهی نداشت.
‎گزارش‌های غیررسمی می‌گویند او به دلیل فعالیت‌های مذهبی‌اش در اواخر دهه چهل ناچار شد تهران را ترک کند و پس از جراحی پلاستیک و بلند کردن موهایش با هویت تازه‌ای در قالب یک درویش به فعالیتش ادامه داد.
