Type M Meditation

Track consisting of 1 bass, 1 guitar, 1 drum and heavily processed vocals, this is arguably a bit of an album filler. Started out jamming and it turned into this, didn't really go ahead and polish it (like, making the drums more interesting, and so)

I remixed it in a functional/minimal style this year to be included on the Overland album, and now making it public here on the Cloud as well to bridge the time until I can actively work on new material again.

I like the lyrics, mostly:

Angels Too Expire (2021 remix)

this is a recording from a couple of years ago, just me and guitar. 

So I'd watched the amazing Peter Jackson, WW1 documentary film, They Shall Not Grow Old. It really brought the subject to life, and was a vivid and sensitive documentation of the great war. 

The following night I watched a BBC documentary which was an insight into the origins of shell shock, in terms of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, what we would now call PTSD. Some really harrowing stories were told from WW1. 

One story in particular haunted me. A tale of a young teenager suffering from shell shock and sent home to recover before going back to the trenches. He was so traumatized by the effects of war, that he pleaded with his mother to hide him under the stairs when the army came looking for him. The mother did exactly that, but the boy was dragged back off to war, where the  boy could well suffer the ignominy of being killed by his own comrades if he refused to fight.

It's hugely hard to comprehend this sort of story, and it's not my place to condemn or condone behaviour in warfare as I have no experience whatsoever of it.  

But I can certainly feel empathy for the boy, and although these harrowing tales are hard to rationalize, this song was my meagre attempt to show empathy and genuine compassion towards a story that touched me greatly.

And so the song is told as, The Boy Beneath The Stairs.

Monosilabic Maze

Stonerjazz, Uziel, and me have joined forces once again for another adventure in our fantastical concept album universe 'the land of Zed'! This time we are also joined by a new collaborator, Zed a.k.a. Francesca from Italy. It is just coincidence/synchronicity that her name is the same as the title of this series, but after crossing paths on soundcloud and listening to her music, we thought she would be a good fit!

The lyrics for this one pick up on a thread of the story that we left hanging at the end of episode 2, 'Johnny and the Holy Din' ... but there are call-backs to nearly all the other songs in the series too if you listen closely.

Through some inexplicable and somewhat puzzling magical circummstance beyond understanding as we know it; an opening opened amongst the craigs and mists and the protruberances high in the mountains of southern Zed.. And out of the dank and dark and stink of the stank stepped a warrior so fine with a golden accordian that did shine like the sun.

And the musicians all trapped in the sky screamed and they cried for they had lost all their hope and their mojo was gone and they were prepared to die. They were prepared to die..

So Johnny sat down on the ledge in front of the cave so incredibly brave with legs dangling in space and began to play a tune so sweets that even the red parrots and monkeys started to cry, and Roy the despicable despot was Shaken to his shoes and said: 

"Hey Johnny, can you play me some Blues??"

All of Zed did head for the byways that led to the mountains that day.. The Azzure eyed twits and all of their brats, the crows in their leathers with beads in their feathers, the Rats in their custom made chevys from mars. Though sadly the Trout had to stay but needless to say, there was a grand party that day when twenty two hundred entered that cave with visions of home, songs in their brains, and hopes in their hearts...And No one suspected the Evil that lay deep in the guts of the southern mountains of Zed..
