The Fermentation Cycle is a two book industrial noir saga by Raquel Fischer. It follows Elara Wexley, a reluctant heir trying to keep the Violet Boar brewery alive while rats, bad paper, and a rotting city move under her feet.

This playlist is the full audiobook version, each chapter carried on lofi instrumentals and the soft hiss of a 1940s radio. It is working class, queer, political, and deeply bodily. Pressure sits in every pipe and ledger line while the rats and the people show who really has a conscience.

The Fermentation Cycle is an adult industrial-noir duology set in 1940s Dockstring Ward, where brine, coal, and “polite” civic power grind people down with the smile of procedure. At its center is the Violet Boar Brewery—an old heat-sweating organism of brick and iron, called a Kiln by history and a Loom by rumor—kept alive by brutal work, dangerous improvisation, and the kind of loyalty that forms when the world refuses to save you.

Elara Wexley inherits the Boar along with her father Roland’s damaged ledger: a physical relic of promises, liabilities, and misdirection. As the Ward’s mouth turns against them—“unsafe,” “loom,” “diseased”—taste becomes law and reputation becomes enforcement. Proof Hall, the city’s velvet tribunal, doesn’t need to beat you; it stamps you, names you, and lets the room do the rest. Rival houses circle for blood, civic hands tighten the paper-noose, and every delay has a price measured in payroll, coal, and bodies.

But something real moves beneath the city’s language.
