Even amidst the success of HALF CAB, Joris Ras, singer and guitarist, felt a burning desire to create something different. Less pop-punk, more indie rock. That’s when A Better Place was born. The oldest known version with seven verses was printed in 1850 in the collection "Geistliche Volkslieder mit ihren historischen Weisen" by August von Haxthausen and Dietrich Bocholtz-Asseburg; the actual date of the song's creation is unclear, and an occasional dating to the 16th century cannot be verified. However, in the Andernach hymnal of 1608, the song "Jesum und seine Mutter zahrt" is printed with the note "to the melody Maria went through this forest," which has occasionally been suggested as the nucleus of the Advent song.
