Il nous a quittés le 29 août dernier à l’âge de 85 ans. Rainford Hugh Perry, plus connu sous le nom de Lee « Scratch » Perry laisse le dub et le reggae bien plus audacieux et abouti qu’à l’époque de ses premiers succès jamaïcains en 1969. Tour à tour, arrangeur, musicien, chanteur, ingénieur du son et surtout, immense producteur, The Upsetter (l’emmerdeur) a changé la face du genre par son génie et sa folle créativité artistique. Grâce à son travail de mixage, il a aussi donné ses lettres de noblesse aux versions (face B) qu’il a su rendre aussi attractives, sinon plus, que les morceaux chantés de la face A. De ses premiers titres en tant que producteurs à ses classiques sortis de la moiteur du Black Ark studio jusqu’à ses collaborations plus récentes avec Mad Professor ou Adrian Sherwood, retour non exhaustif sur le colossal catalogue de ce prodige du dub, en 27 titres 100% vinyles.

Pupa Vinylist is a french reggae-lover who lives for many years in Germany. With a few friends he founded the Rebelion Soundsystem in a town called Dubstadt, where they are responsible for some of the heaviest sessions in the region with many well-established artists like Mungo's Hi Fi, Cultural Warriors, Jahtari, Subactive and Riddim Tuffa among many others.

He selects all kind of soundsystem styles from the late 60s to modern production but his favorite era is still the early 80s where Deejays “rubbed” the dubs in the yards they called dancehalls, bringing their skills over old Studio One classics, played all night long on self-build but heavy Soundsystems.

With this mixtape he wants to share his love for this very raw sound through a versatile selection, from Channel One rub a dub classics toward to the early digital productions.

Here is a little 80s style selection from a Tuesday evening after teaching school all day. Tunes and a spliff or two is no better way to relax. I figured I had not posted a selection in quite a while so I hit record and here is what happened!! All vinyl recorded live, all vibes!! I start off with a little mid 80s almost digi era selection but end up going back and playing a little bit of everything in the roots variety!! Some rare 7s and 12s along with a single 10 inch acetate cut to Paula Clarke's University in a dubplate style. The rarities are accompanied by a few classic tunes to keep you singing along. I tried to keep it with the 80s rub a dub feel all the way though! Definitely worth checking out!
