DJ JM - Abnormal EP

Abnormal is the sound of DJ JM ratcheting it up a notch, both in production-value and musical creativity. The title itself stands as a compact explainer of DJ JM's constant sonic assignment – Abnormal consolidates years of JM's work to keep club music weird and unexpected. Retaining the chunky percussion and quick-stepping rhythms he built his name on, the EP also contains intricate, cleverly designed sound-beds, and extends the menacing electro-techno swagger DJ JM began exploring on his previous No Days Off and Squash EPs.

Preferring synths over samples, Abnormal is filled with sudden bursts of psychedelic melody, off-kilter audio-manipulations and bubbling acid-trip basslines. The tracks also have a subtle but distinctly Lithuanian edge, drawing influence from the iterative, morphing patterns of the folk symbols and insignia carved into the remains of ancient settlements near Vilnius.
'Syze' bounces melodic percussive riffs across an arpeggiated bassline, with synth flourishes and talking drums squeezed in between. 'Pepper' has DJ JM's trademark high-energy vocal chants and a thick, slamming bassline. The title track, 'Abnormal', is perhaps the most stripped back, building a weighty atmosphere through increasingly choppy perc stabs. 'Erazer' closes out the EP with ducking filtered pads and sliding scales through an industrial rhythm section. Each one stands as a "wtf was that?!" set highlight, a vortex of wild ideas in a club-primed package.

DJ JM - Abnormal

With Dwellers, language and symbolism run deep as CAIV, a new collaboration from Israel Vines and Camille Altay, challenges listeners to embrace the ambiguity of existence, and accept incongruity as a vital part of the whole.

CAIV was borne of the partnership initiated on Israel Vines' 2021 track, Keeping, and Dwellers delves into the realms of sound, semiotics, and half-obscured meanings, starting with the word-association from the pair's chosen moniker that led to the EP's title.

As Vines explains, "CAIV is obviously our initials combined, and we both liked the "cave" references that it brought to mind - digging, exploring, existing pre-modernity and continuing underground through the ages."

Across the four tracks CAIV use both language and rhythm to create a dense strata of significance and buried meaning - titles like G&ouml;belki Tepe and &Ouml;tzi 2.0 reference prehistoric relics whose full history is unlikely to ever be unearthed, while Cymbalism and Shamanfreude exhibit a joy in word play that hints at the very old and modern at the same time.

Altay explains this further, "This convergence of pre-civilized ironies, opposites, conundrums, conjectures, this is what I love about these great human discoveries. There is no definitive answer - someone hazards a guess that is grasping for meaning. We can only feel our way towards the truth of it, based on the signs and symbols we know and have associations with."

Fittingly, the music itself is deep and reverberant - combining primaeval rhythms with modern sound production and unexpected instrumentation. The opening track, Cymbalism, is built around samples of Altay interacting with Polish artist Alicia Kwade's TunnelTeller - a sculpture they describe as "resonant metal tubes and concrete, resembling an instrument waiting to be played"; again this neophile urge to do things differently leads them paradoxically to techniques that might have been second nature to humans thousands of years ago.

Altay can't fully put a name to this drive: "I feel like in the music we write, Israel and I are grasping toward a language that we both share and grew up speaking, but can't actually write down. It's referential, and specific, but hard to describe&hellip;we live on opposite sides of the country, so the music we send back and forth feels a lot like we're signalling to each other by lighting fires on a mountain. It's a way to communicate deeply over a great expanse with a nonlinear gesture." It is this instinct to transmit experience in novel ways which drives the CAIV project.

CAIV - Göbekli Tepe

Amsterdam-based DJ, producer and biologist Teqmun is next up on Nerve Collect with Worms Still Have To Eat The Dirt, a six-track EP of blistering fusion sounds that come with remixes from Ma Sha and TSVI.

Tijmen Blokzijl's work is an involving eco-system of electronic collisions - IDM, breakbeat techno and bass are in constant mutation as he layers in deft melodies, cooks up punchy rhythms and screws about with synths. He has done so on the likes of Sann Odea, Traumgarten, Flippen Disks and on self-released EPs that have all constantly pushed at the fringes of sound design. Now he brings all that together again across four electrifying tracks for Gamma Intel and Identified Patient's Nerve Collect.

This EP finds Teqmun departing from the cute and colourful elements of previous releases and becoming inspired by the harsher phenomena in nature, such as a high speed escape of hopping desert rodents called Jerboa, deadly sea slugs and fluffy Echinopsis cactus. I am often inspired by nature and its images and quickly get real sounds or feelings of atmosphere in my head when I see images of natural processes. In this case, it’s grimmer natural processes that inspired me which is why these tracks are much wilder than previous releases, therefore they fit in perfectly with Nerve Collect.

'Hand Full of Fluff' kicks off with a playful rhythm and churning bass that is brought to life with prickly percussion. Shards of melody and scattered hits are fired like ray guns across the track. The EP title track is an impossibly kinetic rhythm with fizzing textures and thudding kick patterns that sound like techno made purely by malfunctioning AI. That same sense of futurism pervades ‘A Jerboa's Escape' which has tightly coiled and broken-up drum patterns looping below eerie, unsettling pads that glow brightly in the percussive chaos. 'Corn Has Ears' is another physical club rhythm made from millions of tiny fragments that all coalesce around a harrowing bassline and 'Slug No Escargot' brings dystopian raps to static-laced bass and harder drum patterns. Last of all is the bouncy and buoyant 'Optimistic' with its post-trap vocals and thrilling club rhythms.

First to remix is New York innovator Ma Sha. She flips 'Slug No Escargot' into a percussive workout with writhing bass and cyborg vocal shards that soundtrack an intergalactic meltdown. Next comes London-based Italian TSVI. His take on 'Optimistic Fly' is big, elastic techno with decaying synth leads and zippy pads pulling you in several directions at once.

Teqmun's Worms Still Have To Eat The Dirt EP manages to sound completely out of this world while also connecting on a deeply emotional level.
