Israel’s hottest export follow up excellent EPs on Hivern and I’m A Cliché with a 3-tracker for the global psychedelic cult of Multi Culti.

Tel Aviv’s Red Axes are one of the most exciting new acts in dance music, with rich sound that is musical, deep, trippy and organic, while remaining precise and lethally effective in the club. The range in their sound is impressive, their talent unmistakeable. They are one of our favourite artists of the year, and this latest record is one of their best yet.

Lead track 'Waiting for a Surprise’ builds around a mid-tempo disco bassline, with tough percussion, and rugged synth stabs, but it’s the eerie and unique sounding vocals of Brazilian collaborator Abrao that bring everything together. This one is a guaranteed bomb for building up, tearing down, peak time or chilling out… an outstanding track in every sense, the kind that force trainspotters to the DJ booth to discover what’s playing. Next up, ‘Hope’ kicks off with resonant, delayed toms, adding a haunting howl and synths before dropping into a wild, clanging, carnivalesque frenzy. It’s understated, but advanced, with an interesting arrangement that really opens up in the second half. Finally, 'The Metal Bender’ slows the tempo but ups the vibe into an elated, slow-burning space-disco anthem. Fantastic stuff!

Melbourne’s Kris Baha, fresh from launching his Power Station imprint, offers a stripped down remix of ‘Waiting for a Surprise,’ with a heavy, industrial-influenced groove that wanders into the deep, dark end of party strasse.

Uncanny Valley's Jacob Korn puts the pressure on Conga Fever's "Chihuahua" and steers the original towards a heavy new-beat-esque groove with sharply resonating claps and chugging bassline, as the Hamburd-based Mireia Records marks its tenth release with a split EP between two musically-minded outfits: Amsterdam’s Pin Up Club and Berlin's Conga Fever.

Premiere: Conga Fever - Chihuahua (Jacob Korn Remix) [Mireia Records]

Brainchild of Multi Culti A&R, Sascha Funke and Niklas Wandt were introduced by Dreems, who charted a course for the seasoned Berlin-based producer and funky multi-percussionist and singer. 

Wandt was just about to enter the scene forcefully with his collaborative 2LP with Wolf Müller and the debut single of his band Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge. In the icey cold of his warehouse rehearsal space, Funke had him record a variety of slapped, bowed and scratched percussions (congas, talking drum, prepared cymbals played with a bass bow) over his tracks. These first efforts were later expanded into joint sessions at Sascha's home studio and, within a few weeks, the journey reached it’s destination: Wibe strasse, Deutschland.

At first glance, they seem an odd couple: a techno veteran of almost thirty years meets a side-burned upstart socialized in Free Jazz and Krautrock. but the shared sonic influences come through in the hypnotic, dubbed-out sound, perhaps rooted in the close connection the two share to the Rheinland region in West Germany, Funke as part of the Kompakt family and Wandt by origin and socialization in the Cologne and Düsseldorf music scene centered around the Salon des Amateurs. Regional flavours, global appeal. Multi Culti, promoting local collaboration, one freaky record at a time.

Harold's Boué aka Abstraxion aka Lion's Drums from Marseille new goodie!  Hot day in this cozy town of France with not enough sleep. It inspired Harold to work on new tracks around the idea of creating music to reflect his city: a bit rough, but luminous and influenced by elements of Mediterranean, African and Northern European cultures. This has translated into a heavily percussive sound, in which tribal disco grooves invoke the spirits of voodoo-techno. The project's name is a tribute to the astrological sign of Harold’s son, who was born at the same time as the music on the EP.

When two of today's finest selectors and DJs join forces for a three-hour B2B set, you know things are about to get funky. Recorded at Ohm in April 2018, the present mix finds fabled Neroli boss Volcov and Mother Tongue mastermind Patrick Gibin merging their widescreen vision and savoir-faire for a straight out compelling session of twin-engined floor heroics, capable to spiff up the greyest day.

To quote it soulful would be an understatement so much soul - as a genre and character - blatantly infuses the whole of this mix; and to limit it to the sum of its parts like most coldly executed mixes out there may be broken down to, would be missing the point completely. The groove is alive, and both DJs sure know how to keep the ticker running; weaving narratives as intricate in their build as they are simple to enjoy with your brain shut off. Hip-hop, soul, disco, r&b, jazz, funk, boogie, the spectrum's wide but the flow's smooth as one would expect from such vividly unique talents.

Not a mere addition of technical qualities and unparalleled selection skills, the union of Volcov and Gibin has given birth to an ephemeral giant of sorts, capable of transcending time and space through music like few can boast being able to. If mixing is an art as we believe, these two gents clearly belong to the higher class of wax-spinning maestros. When style and content are combined with such faultless taste and unrelenting efficiency, all one can do is chuck it, listen and let the vibes pour.
