Layers upon layers of synths fortify a dual lead vocal chorus, sweeping the experiencer along the song’s dynamic sighs. -About the song:

Originally a rock song from a previous project, “Make Me Wild” was completely overhauled, funkified, and presented as a punchy electronic dance track. The goal was to conjure the soul of an 80’s funk tune, and raise it in a DAW nursery. It had to sound like a band was jamming. Drums were “performed” to emulate a natural feel. Bass automations were composed in reaction to drum improvisations. Prince-esque keys jab between vocal phrases, while “Slap bass” and auxiliary percussion fill in the gaps.

I started writing this after I fell in love with Prince’s Purple Rain. The amount of soulful prowess in his vocals is something I rarely hear in today’s hits. He is truly a master of micro-emotions. Every phrase is a collection of living, breathing inflections. It’s what made pop a thing. Nowadays, “pop” is practically a smear term for something lacking depth. Back in the days of Michael Jackson, it was an artform. So I’m quite comfortable and pleased with how dancey and poppy “Make Me Wild” turned out.

Rave Boar is a big believer in group effort, especially when it comes to vocals. Guest vocalists Tracy Lofton and Jared Chastain can be heard singing along with Rave Boar’s Heather Killebrew in the three part harmony section. It was fun. I pretty much let them write their own parts. Before and after every take it went something like “do something lower - try something higher - yeah that’s good, now put your back into it”. The BGVs added gobs of energy, even when just slightly in the mix.

For the key solo, I worked with funky keysman, Ryan Bailey, who was in my funk band at the time. Benjamin and I designing a lead synth that we could crossfade into a vocoder. I just let Ryan have at it for a while, and he tore it up. I strongly recommend getting professional musicians to perform solos in your tracks (for those of you who aren’t Haywyre anyway). His ideas really provided an energy that drives the song to levels we wouldn’t have gotten to with nit-picky, automated, drawn-in midi notes. I also recommend having a drummer record the drum part on your 16 pad device. He will come up with ideas you would never have thought of.

Another decision Benjamin and I had to make was deciding how “old school” a production style to emulate. “Sh**y is pretty” is a catchphrase I heard used in the production of funk. But I wanted it to thump and rumble like an Au5 or a Koan Sound track. It's a new day for funk!

I hope you put this song to good use! I recommend bumping up the bass in your eq and cranking it at a dance party… I also recommend you hiring Rave Boar for a dance party.

We infused the funk… with itself.

Had so much fun working on this. So many happy funky accidents leading to unplanned but crucial elements. Layers for days. I’ve been listening to a lot of obscure Parliament/Funkadelic music recently. I was inspired to somehow create a similar George-Clinton-and-his-gang party atmosphere for this remix. Lots of random improv dialogue and vocals were inserted in the final days of production. Everyday the song became something more infectious to work on. I’ve never thrown so much shit at the wall and had it stick. Slap bass was provided by funky old friend, George Tate, who played in Chicago’s funk/r&b scene in the 80’s and 90’s. The slap bass was a later addition to the initial groove, which filled a crucial part of the mix I was unaware of. A layer of glitch was added to the arrangement. This song more than any we’ve made in the past plays with parts that weave in and out of playing on top of each other as well as in between each other. Still shocked it wasn’t a train-wreck. The drop features an organic vocal layer comprised of several takes of improv ‘oh oo whoa oh’ takes from myself and Heather swathed in reverb and chopped into rhythmic submission. The bass arrangement features some fun kick samples as wavetable experiments. I also particularly like the way the slap bass is fit into the drops.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been digging into Parliament more recently. In some recent interviews, George Clinton spoke of “the funk” as an evolving entity, which changes forms throughout the decades. For example, the word “swag” means to the current generation, what “funky” meant to kids in the 70-80’s. Anything that’s cool and makes people want to get down is funk as far as Clinton is concerned. This thought inspired me to make the dialogue part, where funky chipmunk voices discuss turning a trap song into funk. It was during this process that a pivotal line, “It’s all funk to me” was hap't upon. So basically Rave Boar has done the impossible and infused the funk… with itself.

This track is about 90% generated from the wonderful Mr. Bill sample pack provided. Other than the voice over, the “on switch”, and the massage chair hum every sound was created from the audio in the sample pack.
