This is crazy good! The production value here is outstanding. I love the solo at 1:40. The vocals are exciting but still in tune. I'm in awe. I added this to my "when you just must rock out" playlist and reposted and voted up.

-About the song:

Originally a rock song from a previous project, “Make Me Wild” was completely overhauled, funkified, and presented as a punchy electronic dance track. The goal was to conjure the soul of an 80’s funk tune, and raise it in a DAW nursery. It had to sound like a band was jamming. Drums were “performed” to emulate a natural feel. Bass automations were composed in reaction to drum improvisations. Prince-esque keys jab between vocal phrases, while “Slap bass” and auxiliary percussion fill in the gaps.

I started writing this after I fell in love with Prince’s Purple Rain. The amount of soulful prowess in his vocals is something I rarely hear in today’s hits. He is truly a master of micro-emotions. Every phrase is a collection of living, breathing inflections. It’s what made pop a thing. Nowadays, “pop” is practically a smear term for something lacking depth. Back in the days of Michael Jackson, it was an artform. So I’m quite comfortable and pleased with how dancey and poppy “Make Me Wild” turned out.

Rave Boar is a big believer in group effort, especially when it comes to vocals. Guest vocalists Tracy Lofton and Jared Chastain can be heard singing along with Rave Boar’s Heather Killebrew in the three part harmony section. It was fun. I pretty much let them write their own parts. Before and after every take it went something like “do something lower - try something higher - yeah that’s good, now put your back into it”. The BGVs added gobs of energy, even when just slightly in the mix.

For the key solo, I worked with funky keysman, Ryan Bailey, who was in my funk band at the time. Benjamin and I designing a lead synth that we could crossfade into a vocoder. I just let Ryan have at it for a while, and he tore it up. I strongly recommend getting professional musicians to perform solos in your tracks (for those of you who aren’t Haywyre anyway). His ideas really provided an energy that drives the song to levels we wouldn’t have gotten to with nit-picky, automated, drawn-in midi notes. I also recommend having a drummer record the drum part on your 16 pad device. He will come up with ideas you would never have thought of.

Another decision Benjamin and I had to make was deciding how “old school” a production style to emulate. “Sh**y is pretty” is a catchphrase I heard used in the production of funk. But I wanted it to thump and rumble like an Au5 or a Koan Sound track. It's a new day for funk!

I hope you put this song to good use! I recommend bumping up the bass in your eq and cranking it at a dance party… I also recommend you hiring Rave Boar for a dance party.
