In times where there is so much political and social unrest, I find myself needing to take a breather in some capacity. Not out of place of ignorance, but more so from a place of self-care & well-being. In this mix, I attempted to move a sense of disorder & tension into a place of solace & light, in hopes to provide you too with a sense of sanctuary. Good music is good for you, and I think we could all use some healing.

Description: 

Panarchy is a systems thinking and ecology concept used to characterize complex systems of people and nature dynamically organized and hierarchically structured within and across scales of space and time. This multidimensional conceptual framework can be used to study the functioning dependency of economic growth and human development on ecosystems and institutions. 

Panarchy consists of an adaptive cycle in a loop of four-phases: growth (r phase), conservation (K phase), release (Ω phase), and reorganization (α phase). In growth, the system expands; in conservation, the system is rigid and stable; in release, or creative destruction, there is a collapse or breakdown; and in reorganization, the system rebuilds and renews itself. The reorganization phase is dominated by the possibility for new futures, new processes to emerge, and the possibility for a system regime shift. 

This theory also emphasizes a “nested hierarchy,” in which smaller systems are nested within larger systems and influence one another in cross-scale interactions. Small systems are fast changing and can have a “revolt” effect that disrupts larger systems (e.g. national politics). Larger systems can have a “remember” effect by influencing how a smaller system reorganizes after collapse (e.g. cultural values influencing how communities rebuild). 

Understanding panarchy helps us recognize that change is not linear progress, but a cyclical, interconnected, and multi-layered process. Ever spiralling upwards and downwards, our systems can be simultaneously growing, resilient, collapsing, and reborn.

Concept:

Over the early pandemic, I was stuck living in a warehouse and grew a garden on our rooftop. For some I started seedlings and for others I just stuck the seeds directly in the planters. Soon, life sprung up and took over, these plants were resilient as fuck. At one point I cut open a cherry tomato from one of the plants and attempted to dry out seeds for the first time. I eventually stuck them in an envelope and forgot they existed between my many moves over the next 5 years. This spring I found them and figured they were bunk but put them in some soil anyway. And lo and behold they all popped up as seedlings! While thinking of how to interpret the concept of degrowth musically, I decided on a mixture of blending songs that repurpose or recycle sounds and melodies. Be it by sampling, interpolation, or sonic aesthetic. Another layer I tried to include were references in lyrics or song titles to our current global situation and possible futures as well as music that sounds both timeless and sci-fi.


I hope this mix can be something to fade into and zone out with while giving the listener a chance to daydream or imagine another world.
