The Nous'Klaer Audio affiliated Dutch & German DJ and producer Oceanic, known for his sets at his residency at the prestigious Amsterdam institution De School, steps up for the latest Phonica mix. Over the hour and a half Oceanic, real name Job Oberman, takes us on a journey of soundscapes, electronics, tech house, percussive rhythms and techno. This mix shows not only Job's musical range, having released Ambient live recordings on De School's De Nieuw label all the way to driven bassy techno on Rush Hour, but his undeniable skill behind the decks as well as his understanding of music and how various genres can be brought together harmoniously.

As Oberman observes in his label mix interview, “there is a connection between all those tracks though - but I find it hard to pinpoint what that is exactly.”

My set for Berlin-based @refugeworldwide aired during the last days of summer (12/09/2023). It's an ambient session with a bit of downtempo, including some of my favorite tunes for a deep state of mind.

African Head Charge is a legendary psychedelic dub outfit who have recently returned to their home label On-U Sound with A Trip To Bolgatanga, their first new album in 12 years. As always it finds the peerless Adrian Sherwood at the controls and joins the dots between what the collective has done before and what they are doing now, all with a distinctly Ghanian twist. The signature drums and chants remain at the core of the album of course, as well as plenty of other thrilling new sonic concoctions on keys, guitar, percussion, strings, vocals, kologo and more. It's the latest chapter in a fascinating story that has already seen them release some 16 albums since its inception in 1981. 

This week's mix is a deep dive into the uniquely melon-twisting sounds of African Head Charge. Sherwood's mastery at the controls means sound is twisted and contorted, dubbed out and reverb-rich from start to finish. Traditional dub sounds melt away into ghoulish vocal passages, unhinged instrumentals come and go and the collective's signature sense of dark soul and mystic ritual holds the whole thing together in a spellbinding fashion.

"Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio.

Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years.

But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of  jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. Brian McBride (1970-2023) was an ambient composer, drone wizard, tonal craftsman, and emulator of "far away" music. As half of Stars of the Lid, the pinnacle duo identified as both post-rock and Arvo Pärt-gardism, McBride is a legendary, internationally recognized name. Many of my friends and listeners know how massive of an influence SOTL – along with the Aix Em Klemm one-off – are on my taste, intellect, and approach to production. SOTL and McBride are widely present in my tracklists and appear often in my sets; I have been attentively collecting this music since I first learned about them in 2003 (thanks be to Epitonic). Today I proudly own all of the SOTL catalog.

For me, McBride's sonic corpus represents several very visceral and personal ideas and memories. Apart from being a glowing representation of immersive distance and landscape, of nature growing intolerant and stating its intentions, McBride’s music at its core is the soundtrack of Central Texas plains and rocky outcroppings, of eroded mountains and dirty, tired water, of the otherworldliness of the Edwards Plateau at night and the mystique of cicada chorusing in harmony with multiple lawn mowers after a violent thunderstorm. It is the tragic music of being from an oppressive place but bearing a profound love for it nonetheless. It is gentle reminders of the environments of my childhood; it is heavy bliss.
