Carnival Spirit [Carnival 2014]

From deep in the heartland of all things sultry and sweet, comes Precision’s very first riddim release for Carnival 2014. It is a tribute to their birthright and also an explosive celebration of the fact that without the South there could be no Soca.

The aptly named Sando Riddim, has been specially crafted by the team to musically exemplify the majesty of their particular corner of the earth.

A hypnotic bassline embedded with honeyed melodies, combined with stunning voices and gifted writers, brings to life the distinctive magic that fills the air as you head south of the lighthouse. 

The fireworks begin in Farmer Nappy’s song, which describes the natural friendliness and all encompassing sense of welcome felt not only in his native Siparia, but throughout our twin islands. That homey feeling, which turns each familiar face into “Family”.

Also featured on this riddim is one of Precision’s very own songwriters, Akeem “Preedy” Chance, who debuts as an artist with the sizzling track, “Wining Champion”. He gives an exhilarating performance as he steps into the limelight, more than ready to show another facet to his talent.

Patrice Roberts is the sole female in this release, but she holds her own and in “Doh Rough Meh”, fervently demands that this season, all men should mirror their southern brothers and focus on keeping up with the seductive foreplay of the women this year…or else.

Speaking of southern seduction, the reigning Soca Monarch, Machel Montano, beguiles the ladies with “Drop It Down”, assuring them that this carnival he will provide their derrières with safe haven, and endless enjoyment as he takes them far deeper south than they have ever been before.

Never one to be left out when it comes to paying tribute to the southlands, Jaiga joins forces with Nutron for “Gyal Season”; a harmonious dedication to the exotic beauties who traverse these isles in rampant variety, adding much appreciated spice to very grateful male eyes and lives.

Soul singer Isaac Blackman takes us out spirit dancing in his selection “S.O.C.A. (Soul Of Calypso)". With his stirring vocals he awakens the most dormant of feelings, as he lifts us to heights of musical ecstasy where Soca equals love and love is shared through Soca. ©Mystie Thongs

Machel Montano - Drop It Down [Sando Riddim]

As the enticing strums of Carnival 2014 start winding their way onto the airwaves, Nadia Batson delivers a groovy selection that showcases her signature powerhouse of a voice, as she firmly solidifies her position as one of the festival's favourite songstresses. 

Listeners are in for an exciting treat with "AGGRESSIVE", as the Precision team has laid out a bubbling music bed of rhythms and melodies that immediately captures attention, as it simultaneously gives the singing diva room to bring to the forefront a renewed and refreshed version of her unique style. 

This is clearly evident in the writing displayed by her and her young but exceptional co-writer, Josiah St. Lewis-Noray. Together they have created a virtual inferno of lyrical instructions, which will surely incite everyone to extreme heights of bacchanalian behaviour once they hit the road. 

It's only the first release from Precision Productions, but given the irresistibility of the song, this is undoubtedly going to be a Soca season that delivers quite a mellifluent punch to the already impatient masqueraders.

Nearly a year after producing Vybz Kartel’s “Kingston Story” and fresh from delivering Popcaan’s “Get Gyal Easy,” Dre Skull returns with a brand new riddim, featuring four original vocals from some of the biggest Caribbean artists. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim, which is not just a name but also a serving suggestion, is a powerful and emotive track, with lingering echoes that build and fold over each other until the dancehall bassline kicks in and a minimal synth-stab leaves the track wide open for the vocalist to shine. King of the Dancehall, Beenie Man, sets the riddim alight with his fast- flowing ode to the female form on “Hot Like Fire,” while Mixpak family member Natalie Storm delivers a classic braggadocios take on “Rock The Runway.” Normally found voicing the upper echelons of bpm, Soca Monarch Machel Montano makes a rare appearance on a dancehall riddim, keeping his energy intact for an expressive tune dedicated to winery – “Go Down.” Popcaan rounds off the release with 'The System', an epic, conscious track that sees the young deejay describe the trials and struggles of ghetto youth in the face of the system. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim is not only a testament to the versatility of the artists featured, but to dancehall itself, a proud addition to the ever-growing Mixpak dancehall catalogue.
