Ray Lema was born in Zaire, DRC, when it was called the Kingdom of Kongo. While preparing for the priesthood, he studied Gregorian chants, and was deeply influenced by Mozart and Chopin. Later, as Music Director of the National Ballet of Zaire, he discovered both the science and magic of traditional rhythms, leading to his pursuit of becoming a Drum Master.
Since moving to in Paris, France in 1982, Ray Lema has been involved in various musical collaborations, including with Stewart Copeland, Bulgarian Voices, Morrocan Gnawa, and several Symphony orchestras. He has published some 20 CDs, and has won prestigious Europeans awards and distinctions, including a Golden Django, a Charles Cros Award, and Officer of Art and Culture.
Musical education in Africa remains a top priority, and he often gives master classes to young musicians. 
Ray Lema performs piano solo, or with his afro‐jazz quintet or his african vocal quartet (Nzimbu). He is frequently invited to perform with symphony orchestras.
Considered a godfather of world music, Ray Lema is currently exploring jazz, classical and African music, each with his very special touch.
