Turn of Events (disquiet0670)

Recorded, mixed & mastered 27 Nov 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

This piece is a section of a longer generative improvisation. Using a patch I created earlier in the evening on Arturia Prophet V3 in the VS mode, I started in Bitwig with a few sequenced notes, Nitwig’s own random elements, CodeFN42 RandArp & iZotope’s Neoverb. I chose a small section to replicate across four tracks in Ableton Live and committed some variation with Live’s native devices and some other iZotope plugins. 

This original version of "Ion Exchange & Found" was submitted as part of Naviar Haiku 569, Resplendent.

Ion Exchange & Found  (naviarhaiku569)

The Assignment: Record a drone that goes from simple to complex to simple.
 
Step 1: You may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.

Step 2: Now think about what makes a drone simple and what makes a drone complex.

Step 3: Now record a piece of drone music that begins simple, gets complex, and then gets simple again. And note: The simple drone at the end needn’t necessarily be the same sort of drone with which the piece opens.

* Print 2: Reprint to remove clock errors in the outro. Less low end roll-off. 
* Print 3: Removed some Lexicon ticks

* Clicky drone: Arturia Microfreak “Cliched Things” into Lexicon PCM 41, full square wave modulation, fed to a spring reverb by a Radial Tank Driver.

The opening hit represents the strong trunk of the tree from which the wind strips the tree of its leaves and flowers where the high notes of the piano thru a delay represent the sound of the petals sifting down together. There's a drastic 'ping' that occurs that's meant to symbolize a pebble thrown into a still pool of water and how the ripples bounce back and forth and mix together but ultimately calm is once again restored.

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt recalled the Jeux d'enfants ("Games for Children") compositions of George Bizet, and suggested creating our own work inspired by a toy or game. I decided pretty quickly on that childhood favorite, the ouija board. 

The seed of the song came from a rambling piano improvisation over a simple placeholder 4-note bass line. I chopped and arranged the interesting parts of the piano to form sections, then recorded fresh performances for each one. I was too lazy to play my actual bass but I spent a long time recording and refining the synthetic bass part. The percussion is handful of simple hand-rolled patterns on a modeled Roland CR-78.

I went back and forth on whether to include samples, and to what degree. I settled on the scrape of the planchette and the ghostly voice of the girl in the ouija board, responding to the unheard questions from the person whose hands are on the planchette. My hope is for the listener to place themselves in that role and enter into dialog with the spirit.
