every now and then a producer enters the world wide chat and unlocks a new pathway, helping you rethink the way certain things(music) are meant to be. bristol-based georg-i is one of those artists. making his debut on yco in 2021 with the epic ‘yco002’ featuring the much-loved ‘body static’, georg-i made his mark from the get go. an artist in the truest sense of the word, georg-i’s music is grand in sound, often powerful club tools that are both wonky and dynamic and so unique in that you can spot one of his tracks coming into a mix or set from a mile away. somewhat earwormy, like ‘stasis’, which felt like it became every djs favourite track but blew you away every time no matter how many times you heard it. then there’s the debut release on ccl’s subglow imprint, ‘rebuild’, that was so deliciously wormholey, i’m not sure there’s anyone else making oddball club tracks like georg-i right now that brings together so many of his influences from punk to the industrial environments he grew up in. last month, georg-i released a collaborative release with lisbon-based lyricist older brother for katiusha’s grace imprint, channeling a slightly different side of his soundscape as he delves into hi-tek bass and trip-hop, injected with gritty vocal poetry. ‘foundations’ sounds like a continuation of ‘torn in two’ from the subglow ep whilst the ep as a whole draws influences from massive attack and samurai music. 

constantly wondering how georg-i consistently makes music this good & otherworldly, we caught up with him to chat about the process behind ‘rebuild’ and ‘warm skin’, his artistic journey and early influences, working with vocals and more.

Better late than never! Here is, finally, the show that was aired nearly half a year ago. But one of the shows I am especially proud of.
For this show of "Radio Impuls" I had the great honour to record an interview with Bristol (UK) local hero Larry McCarthy aka @iambruce. Thanks to Larry for engaging with the DIY-approach of the show, that hit especially hard, when the rain water from the roof came down on us mid interview in the Bistro of the Mensa (I cut all our surprised screams out). Thanks for doing the show with me and keeping up with my bad English. And thanks for the great evening at the Rempart Rave all around! 
Bruce is internationally recognised for his eclectic DJ sets. But he has also made a name for himself in the UK club and experimental music scene with releases on labels such as Livity Sound, Hessle Audio, Timedance and Hemlock. In the words of Resident Advisor: "Larry McCarthy creates postmodern rhythmic drama at the burning intersection of UK dance music." He has since founded his own label ‘Poorly Knit’ (https://wordsofbruce.bandcamp.com/album/belly-burned-alive). In the context of our invitation to the Rempart Rave in Freiburg in December 2024, I seized the opportunity to interview him about his new project, which moves away from more strictly club music in the direction of ‘avantgarde pop’ - and in which Bruce lets his voice take centre stage musically, as you can here on his album from December 2023: "Not Ready For Love" (https://wordsofbruce.bandcamp.com/album/not-ready-for-love)

The show contained our interview and a part of his set, that he played in the Mensa at the Rempart Rave. It also contained a preview of his track "Golden Water Queen" that is already released. Radio Impuls is generally about electronic music. It focuses on the curiosity for the sound, history and developments of experimental genres that develop at the boundaries of club music. The show centres around the questions of how different subgenres influence each other and how this relates to the subcultural scene, specific artists, labels and locations. On a sound level, the programme is a continuation of what the Impuls Crew in Freiburg aims to do by DJing and organising parties, among other things: To create curiosity in order to remain curious about other, new left-field sounds within electronic club music.

A statement mix from the Dutch artist also known as A Made Up Sound, 2562 and ex_libris. 

What makes something sound like Dave Huismans? His music carries a signature you can't quite name, a tension which has defined every chapter of his career. And unlike most producers, he really does operate in phases. 

A man of many monikers, Huismans resurfaced this year after nearly a decade away with two new aliases, ex_libris and In Transit. His latest ventures, though sonically a world away from the work under his most recognised projects, share the same slipperiness, intricacy and disregard for tidy genre borders. 

"Naiveté and a lack of prejudice… a really wide-eyed type of open-mindedness," Huismans once told RBMA, recalling his youthful forays into dance music and that ethos is alive and well on RA.1015.

Huismans's second RA Mix is as equally thrilling as his first one 15 years ago, traversing a map of influences from Madlib and Gyrofield to Prince and Autechre.  There's no shortage of atmosphere (Losoul's "Sunbeams and the Rain" is one particular highlight), but the throughline is groove: soulful, vocal deep house into driving techy depths, walls of glitchy drums and frantic percussion into guitar funk. 

"I got carried away a bit," Huismans says of RA.1015 below. And that's no bad thing. It sounds like someone enjoying himself again, and perhaps, after letting a few old skins fall away, Huismans is ready to shift shape once more. And if it's anything like the last time, a lot of good music awaits.
