Hege A. Jakobsen Lepri is a Norwegian-Canadian translator, walker, coffee addict, haikuist, and short-story writer. She currently divides her time between Norway, Italy and Canada. She started writing haiku to get past writer’s block but got hooked on the daily practice.

Her haiku, senryu, and haibun have since been featured in Frogpond Journal, Under the Basho, Best Haiku Anthology, Poetry Pea, Haiku Blossoms, Quatrain.Fish, Autumn Moon, Prune Juice, Songs of the Pandemic, Haiku Journal, Dadakuku, Heron’s Nest, Hedgerow, Open: Journal of Arts and Letters. Enomoto Seifu was a female poet born into a samurai family in 1732. She focused on her writing mostly after her husband’s death in the mid-1750s, and later in life, she became a Buddhist nun. Her works were collected and published after her death by her son.

Natsume Seibi (1749-1816) was the son of a wealthy Edo rice broker and was acquainted with a number of other famous poets, including Oshima Ryota and Kobayashi Issa. In addition to his poetry, Seibi left behind a number of fine examples of haikai prose.

Jerome Berglund has worked as everything from dishwasher to paralegal, night watchman to assembler of heart valves.

Takahama Kyoshi was a Japanese poet active during the Shōwa period of Japan. He was the editor of the haiku magazine Hototogisu (previously edited by Shiki), where he promoted a more traditional style of haiku, as opposed to other popular schools which did not follow the pattern of seventeen syllables at that time.

Kyoshi also highlighted the symbolic function of the kigo (the seasonal reference), even though the more modern trends were already tending towards seasonless haiku.

Hōsai graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University, where he studied law. He got off to a good start but decided to give up his home, family, and business to jump from one militant religion of Japan to the other.

Just like Taneda Santoka, Hōsai abandoned the traditional verse form of his time and mostly looked at the austere confines of his life for inspiration.

Nakamura Teijo was a Japanese poet from Kumamoto. A great admirer of Sugita Hisajo, she started writing haiku poetry in 1918, when she was eighteen. In 1934 she joined the prestigious Hototogisu magazine and, in 1940, published her first poetry collection, Shunsetsu 春雪. In 1947 she launched a magazine called Kazabana, which she edited and supervised until her death, in 1988.

This is a cover of Boat on the River by Styx, sung by my daughter Haley.  The MIDI class assignment was to download a MIDI file and remix it, adding two or three elements.  The file was downloaded from www.mididb.com.  I changed some of the instrumentation and added parts.

I'm a composer, working from a 3' x 5' studio (some may call it a dinette) in a 5th wheel camper, while traveling the United States. I've been on the road for six years, so most of my recent work will have come from a different state (of mind and location) during my travels.

Music makes me feel better about everything. I don't know that I'm ever happier than when I am creating. I sometimes wonder if creativity isn't one of the primary keys to happiness. Do you ever feel better than when you say, "Look what I did."? This phrase magically conjures the purest sense of childlike joy.

Music works for every part of our lives. We all have music for when we are sad, happy, celebrating, meeting others, when we are alone, and even when we are lonely. Did a song come to mind as you read each of those situations? I remember the first song I ever heard on the radio, on my first bus ride to kindergarten. One of my favorite musical memories is playing in a band for steel beach on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

I love telling stories with music. Everybody loves John Coffey in the Green Mile, but Mr. Jingles should have a song commemorating his reaching and joining the circus at Mouseville. If you agree, join me for this and similar journeys. The music here is synthetic, but as real as you would choose to have it.
