“View’s Peak” by Jane Johnson & Francesco Adornetto has a delicacy that immediately reaches the listener: the piano breathes, with pauses that give space to silence, and every note feels carefully chosen. There’s a sense of a slow ascent, as if you were watching a landscape gradually unfold before your eyes.

The touch is gentle yet firm, with intimate moments that open into luminous passages. It’s not a piece that seeks to impress with virtuosity; it focuses on the essential — and that’s precisely what makes it authentic and poetic.

It conveys a feeling of contemplative calm, yet also of hope — like reaching a summit and taking a deep breath while gazing beyond.

Saitō Sanki (1900 – 1962) was a dentist who discovered his passion for haiku poetry in his mid-thirties, when his colleagues at the hospital in Soto Kanda convinced him to write a haiku for a collection. Later, he became one of the most important exponents of wartime haiku: he was imprisoned in 1940 during the government’s World War II persecution of controversial artists, and was officially forbidden to write until the end of the war.

Back in the early 1990's I became deeply interested in astronomy and cosmology. I would spend  countless evenings at the university's observatory on the scopes and in the astronomy library.  However, as time passed my interest in space began to shift from scientific to philosophical. I no longer saw space as something to be measured and dissected. Instead, I saw and still see it as a beautiful mystery for me to ponder like my ancestors did before me.

Daydream Version Piano

I'm a composer, working from a 3' x 5' studio (some may call it a dinette) in a 5th wheel camper, while traveling the United States. I've been on the road for six years, so most of my recent work will have come from a different state (of mind and location) during my travels.

Music makes me feel better about everything. I don't know that I'm ever happier than when I am creating. I sometimes wonder if creativity isn't one of the primary keys to happiness. Do you ever feel better than when you say, "Look what I did."? This phrase magically conjures the purest sense of childlike joy.

Music works for every part of our lives. We all have music for when we are sad, happy, celebrating, meeting others, when we are alone, and even when we are lonely. Did a song come to mind as you read each of those situations? I remember the first song I ever heard on the radio, on my first bus ride to kindergarten. One of my favorite musical memories is playing in a band for steel beach on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

I love telling stories with music. Everybody loves John Coffey in the Green Mile, but Mr. Jingles should have a song commemorating his reaching and joining the circus at Mouseville.
