Review: From Juno Download

There are records that come along and change the musical landscape single-handedly: records that shift paradigms, push envelopes and rewrite rulebooks. Sometimes, though, it doesn't actually matter if you're not doing anything new or groundbreaking, just as long as you're doing what you do well. This two-tracker from Clean Is Good falls into the latter camp: the two disco/house fusions presented here do precisely nothing you haven't heard 1,000 times before, but just you try not dancing to them! A cheeky, familiar-sounding horns riff just nudges it for 'Midnight Joke' but both cuts are quality. If it ain't broke, etc...

London-based Mike Misiu has had a handful of stellar yet secret releases under his belt, and now this squirrel is finally getting his nut with his RNT debut! The A side launches into a churning and chugging rendition of a Donald Byrd 70’s jazz soul classic, followed by a cheekily infectious treatment of well-loved modern themes, while the flip kicks into high gear with two uptempo soulful stompers.

Juno review: It's hard to properly define a category for Goldboy's music, but what we can say is that he makes pretty solid house music with a mystical, delicate edge that sits very nicely alongside the whole nu disco spectrum. Being a Bristolian, he's all about the synths and the wavey pads, elements at the core of "Highway 606", both in its original format, and in the more stripped down version by Ourra. Again, "Cungajam" is a delightful journey through space and time thanks to its hypnotic sequence of melodies, and "We Are Serious" changes the pace by going for a more head-down, funked-out kinda vibe.

St Petersburg resident Sunner Soul has had releases on the likes of Acryl Music, Midnight Riot, Tronic and Armada, but this five-track EP comes on his own Vintage Music label. Opener 'Dancing In Madness' ain't nothin' but a lazy summer groove complete with crowd noise and mucho use of the filters, 'Don't Hold Back' is in a similar vein but has a phatter bottom-end and 'Feel Good 2 U' is another late 90s filter disco throwback, before 'Handle With Care' leads us down a slightly more sophisticated jazz-funk path and 'Sunrise Jam' plays us out with jazz piano and energising James Brown-like whoops and shouts.
