“Bembe” (Bembé) comes from the Yoruba people of West Africa. Depending on the context, the term can refer to a kind of drum, an ethnic subgroup, a religious ceremony, a style of dance, or a genre of music. It is also the name of the track we were solicited to premiere from BlackFilter’s forthcoming digital/vinyl release on the delicious Italian label Ragoo Records. Pellegrino Mazzucchi, the mastermind behind the alias, is a percussionist, DJ, and producer based in Modena, Italy, and owner of a singular sonority that encompasses Latin, Afro, and World Music influences. 

The result of the fruitful partnership between Pellegrino and his fellow countryman Daddario gave birth to the stunning “Bembe”, a two-in-one theme that introduces itself complex percussive elements and mellow synth leads for 2.10 of its 4.41 minutes until the “futuristic Jazz with hints of Electro and Disco” aura jumps in and changes the game entirely, “offering the listener a sonic and refreshing sound experience”.

A new Toy Tonics EP. It’s the second by Venezuelan house DJ and producer Gee Lane. Including amazing remixes by NYC mainstay musclecars!

Gee Lane’s debut EP Metamorphosis (with remixes by Demi Riquísimo and Divorce From New York Remix & PIEK ) came out last October. 
But as Virginie (her real name) is a steady name of the Toy Tonics crew now and plays almost every weekend at one of the worldwide Toy Tonics Jams, it makes sense to put out a follow up fast.

Gee Lane originally from Caracas, now living in Barcelona, is a passionate DJ and vinyl digger with an extraordinary positive energy and attitude. A DJ diva in a positive way. A unique personality with a very strong style (in music but also as a person) and very elaborated ability to read and play with the dancers. Like the first EP, this one has also been recorded in Barcelona and Berlin with a little help from Robin Braum from Athlete Whippet. The music reflects well on her roots and passion for everything that came out of New York’s dance culture. You can hear influences from the 80ies promo disco scenes as well as the 90ies Body & Soul/ Francois Kervorkian / Joe Claussell universe. In fact, Gee Lane after being raised in Caracas and musically educated by her father from a very early age (a composer and musician), moved to New York at a very young age in the late 90ies, where she fell in love with the HOUSE scene. And especially everything that happened at the famous and influential 'Body & Soul' club. 

This culture increased her curiosity to become a DJ (and vinyl digger herself) who is not just interested in house music but wants to explore other genres such as funk, Hip-Hop, jazz and Latin sounds and include these vibes into her DJ sets. As vinyl collector (and long-time record shop employee) since then, she is known for her musical eclecticism, which leads her to mix everything she wants...

We featured 79.5's eponymous album last year on our Disco Juice column as one of the disco releases of the month back in May. Soulful and psychedelic it combined a multitude of sounds and influences from 70's disco to acid Jazz into something intimate and utterly delectable. Fast forward to April this year and now 79.5 and Razor-n-Tape are back with an EP of some of the highlights from the album remixed by some serious players. Step up JKriv, Malik Hendricks, Jubilee, Damien Harris and the brilliant FSQ whose take on B.D.F.Q. injects some serious sleazy dancefloor funk into the track.

To celebrate the release we had a quick chat with 79.5 and they also recorded a sumptuous worship mix packed with some of their favourite female led 80's rare groove and as you might expect it's rather brilliant. OG Razor-N-Tape crew right here! Having graced the RNT hall of fame for only their third release back in 2013, @frankbooker returns in style for round two.

Straight off the bat 'Be Yourself' takes you on a sensuous journey around the disco cosmos. Interplanetary echoes, stratospheric strings and a bass and brass beamed down directly from the outer galaxy are brought together with those heavenly vocals alluring any lost souls.

'More' follows up - a hair raising, funk fuelled edit combining luscious vocals, a badass bassline and the kind of guitar riffs that will leave you straight up salivating for more. This is peak time, delectable disco with an added umph and rhythms that are kind to the discerning DJs out there.

Closing out the EP Frank slows things down to galactic chugger territory, marshalling the funky starship to the underground with the pied piper of supercharged jazz flutes leading the dance.
