Something For Your Mind Body & Soul Pt 1

The ‘Vista’ EP caps off an intensely busy year for Geoff Kirkwood, otherwise known as Man Power. The British DJ/producer has become quite the ‘tour de force’ in 2018, with releases and remixes for Futureboogie, DFA, Correspondant, Exotic Series, Skint Records, and his very own Me Me Me imprint.

So it seems quite fitting to seal a productive 12 months with a release on Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two, a label that itself has been firing out big releases this year from EJECA, Jansons & Senzala and Ahmed himself. And joining this big end of year party, enter stage left, Roman Flügel, who delivers an absolutely stellar remix of ‘Vista’.

Meaty synths and clattering 909 drums are doused in futuristic Italo disco vibes for ‘Outrider’, whilst a winning combo of breakbeats and acid affected bass provide the backbone of the simply gargantuan ‘Vista’. Roman Flügel’s interpretation of the title track brings the break to the fore, playfully teasing out the acidic sounds and surging strings for another truly memorable remix that we’ve come to expect from Mr. Flügel. Closing the EP, ‘Poly Pop’ delivers a vivid and bright burst of melody over clanking percussion and sturdy beats, filled with ‘end of the night’ optimism that’s become Man Power’s forte.

ИДА007 is a vinyl release entitled ‘Pagan Rave EP’ by label’s co-founders Uninc & Kolomensky coming up from the emerging Moscow scene. 
Title track opens EP with breakbeat groove, flute solos and slavic vocals combined with progressive and acid lines to deliver unexpected mix of pagan folk music and rave rhythms. 
‘Ancient Tool’ is another original track on the A-side with tribe vocal samples combined with acid and punchy rhythm section filled up with bongos to create a dancefloor oriented DJ tool with ancient flavor. On the remix duties at the B-side are Ransom Note’s craftsman Timothy Clerkin with slow atmospheric and meditative version of ‘Pagan Rave’ and quickly emerging Olsvangèr from Tel-Aviv who delivers weird oriental progressive club banger made up from the ‘Ancient Tool'. 
Overall there is an 12’’ saturated with different vibes neatly crafted and mixed together for a wide range of feelings for the listener and tools for the DJ.

This September, the Brooklyn based band Underground System released their debut LP WHAT ARE YOU. on Soul Clap Records and embarked on a national label tour. They are now slated to make their European debut in December, and will release a trio of remixes from storied German DJ and Running Back label head Gerd Janson to support. 
Described as a “Band that defies categories” by NPR, Underground System is an ever-evolving convergence of musical and cultural influences. The female-fronted group of global dance music deconstructionists have cultivated a sound as inimitable as its members. Something familiar and referential that simultaneously projects a fiercely original energy, the band synthesizes elements of afrobeat, new wave, dance music, and contemporary classical performance, seen through the international lens of a New York City band in 2018. Peter Matson, bandleader/producer, comments, “Our music is heavily influenced by the context that is projected by the New York underground. As much as we are rooted in afrobeat and other well recognized musical styles, we pay homage to the way these sounds were combined and progressed over the years by pushing to find our own original voice. 

The band has built a lasting reputation around a seamlessly executed stage show, astonishing wherever they go, and compelling crowds to move with unbridled verve. Continuing to reinvent their brand of global dance music, Underground System remains a force determined to recreate, redefine, and reconstruct. Underground System is comprised of Peter Matson on guitar, sequencing, and synths, Domenica Fossati on lead vocals, flute, and percussion, Yoshio Kobayashi on Drums, Jon Granoff on bass, Lollise Mbi on shekere and background vocals, Olatunji Tunji on congas, and Carter Yusatake on trumpet and keyboards. 

Although they are based in New York, Underground System came together from different places, countries, and cultures. Their diverse life experiences including different political times and cultural identities is the foundation for the new album WHAT ARE YOU, the band’s first full-length LP. Departing from the extended forms typically associated with Underground System’s live performances and stylistic roots, the new album is a deep 10 track look into the group’s mix of talented personnel and profound sonic diversity. The first single from WHAT ARE YOU, “Go” was released with an accompanying animated video created by Alice Cohen. The video saw it’s worldwide premiere on Billboard. It’s impossible not to hear the band’s development on this track, where they stay true to their afrobeat roots while incorporating elements of new wave, alternative and post-punk. The full LP was released September 7, 2018 and has since received press and play from outlets such as NPR/PRI, NPR Alt Latino, KCRW, Mixmag, Love Injection, and BBC. 

Since the release, the downtown NY meets afro disco stylings of the album cut ‘Just A Place’ has landed favorably in many DJ’s inboxes, and set off a wave of remixing interest. The first of these remixes to be highlighted via official release on Soul Clap Records will be Running Back label boss Gerd Janson’s driving big room friendly interpretation. Held together by Janson’s signature pulsing italo bass, New Beat influence. The 3 mix package is dancefloor ready. 

The LP has also clearly piqued the interest of music fans across Europe, and following many connections made via radio and agencies well receiving the new music in France and the UK, Underground System is now continuing to support WHAT ARE YOU by bringing the full band overseas for the first time, culminating in their live European debut, December 5-7 at Trans Musicales festival in Rennes, France.

Solid Steel (9th November) This week we welcome Manchester native Ruf Dug to Solid Steel, owner of the appointment-only record store Hi Tackle and label-boss of Ruf Kutz. His releases have also appeared on labels like Unknown To The Unknown, Music For Dreams, Klasse Wrecks and Tusk Wax. With music from Omar-S, Martini Bros, DJ Duke and John Tejada in his mix, he told us;
"I recorded this mix at my studio on a Tuesday morning - it’s 100% vinyl for no other reason than I couldn’t get into the room with the CDJs in it (must improve biometric hacking techniques). I figured well fuck it then I’ll just play out of my bag like it’s a gig.
My record bag is a continual work in progress; I very rarely empty it out and start over so it’s constantly evolving - some things haven’t left literally for years. I just did a reasonably large refresh after the festivals so it’s a little newer to me than normal.
The mix was gonna be longer but the Glowing Palms tune ended sooner than I expected and it seemed like a good point to stop; sometimes u gotta let fate make the big decisions.

Flat Earthers seem to have been making a comeback with the advent of the internet peaking in the mid 1990s. While most people dropped this belief in the 1300s it has seen a resurgence, with a rise in membership.
These are clearly people who do not 'Believe in Rock.' Cannibal Ink are at the heart of this EP from Days of Being Wild, however, everyone's favourite Italian American Luca Venezia AKA Curses gets in on the act... as if that was not enough, Disco Halal and Multi Culti signed double act Simple Symmetry have his the remix duties, which turn a rockabilly original into a high octane disco classic which quite possibly feels more love than Moroder and Summer.
What was a guitar from the original becomes a droney timestretched blanket coated in toms and yet more guitar and a little bit more guitar thrown in for good measure. 
Days of Being Wild has been around for a number of years now and has been played by the likes of Chloe, Daniel Avery, Red Axes, Damian Lazarus and countless other top DJs. With Cannibal Ink splitting to go their separate ways, this label is the perfect place to bow out, with the perfect people to help them in Luca, Sasha and Sergey.
