Description: This is a snippet of Debussy's Arabesque fed as a midi file to Sonic Pi, where it is decoded and used to play the internal piano and pluck synths in Sonic Pi. It has its limitations, but shows that Sonic Pi can be used as a midi file player.

This piece is written by Joshua Haagen, and is published with the composer's permission. It was originally written for Saxophone Quartet and drums, but I have converted it to run on Sonic Pi and use the internal :dsaw synth to voice it, with some reverb and wobble fx applied. The midi drum track was modified to audible notes, which were then read by Sonic Pi and used to select suitable percussion samples to play. I like the strong rhythms and the intricate parts, especially at the start of the second section (after the bar rest). The code can be downloaded from my gist site.

Did some doodling tonight with new Sonic Pi 4.0.2 running on a Raspberry Pi4, which was also running Qsynth. Features new bpm control using Link and built in metronome panel. Effects, synth instrument selection, panning control, tempo, audio fades all controlled directly by Sonic Pi

Qsynthing

Had one or two attempts at coding Bach's Toccata and Fugue to be played by Sonic Pi. This one uses an arrangement in 5 parts by Guillaume Bentaieb for wind instruments, which I have coded to play on Sonic Pi using just built in synths, and applying some reverb. The difficulty is balancing the different parts to blend.  This is my first mix, but I may go further with it. The code is available on my gist site. I have run this on a Mac and on a Raspberry Pi 4 both running Sonic Pi version 4.0.3, but should be OK on version 3.3.1 as well

This music by Purcell was written for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695. It was one the the early pieces that I coded for Sonic Pi in 2014. Eight years later it runs on the latest version of Sonic Pi, with a few tweaks to allow for changes to the app over the years. With the sad news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II today this seemed to me to be a suitable tribute. Listening and reflecting on her long reign (nearly all of my life).  The music is solemn, yet powerful. It has stood the test of time.

Queen Mary Funeral March

Developed from a chord progression tool  by theibbster on sonic-pi.net this code gives the sense of bells playing above a bass not. I think it gives a joyful sound for the Christmas Period.

Second version of this piece without the fadeout. pewrhaps gives a better realisation of what a musical box does. It slows down then just stops when the spring hasn't enough power left to drive it, but doesn't fade out.
