Beware Of Those Old, Red, Dirt Roads

In the deep red clays of Georgia
once bled by Confederate pride
and mixed together with some Union blood
In a vast scarlet blood tide.

Lie Brothers who fought against brothers 
and Fathers who fought against sons
claiming over twenty-five thousand dead 
before the sorrow all was done.

And that the red clay got much redder
Mingled with their salted tears
preserved deeply in the soil
long past one hundred years.

They say these fallen men still walk
down roads that have been cleared
through the edges of their battlefields
where their sad spirits appear.

I know this because I’ve seen them
in the wee hours of the night
On the red dirt roads I’ve traversed
It’s a  haunting, terrible sight…

As my spinning, tire’s noise disturbs
their long and weary sleeps
setting scarlet dust devils rising
from their cold bones moldering deep

In a civilized world unlike their own
callously encroaching  on
hallowed places where brave men, unknown
once were here and then were gone

Often I find myself just praying
that my truck will not break down
or a tire  suddenly blow out
where their souls still walk around

Stuck amongst their vast battalions
Cause ya see I was born a Yankee
and they just might not take kindly
to my heritage….they’d be angry

That I’m riding down the back roads
to deliver my next loads
eighteen wheels crushing their bloodlines
from their war so long ago.

I’m quite sure that I might vanish
If my truck should fail on me
and I’d become their prisoner
trapped with them  eternally.

Like a spy most likely I’d be tried
for the wars not ove.... in their minds
as thier enemy they’d not fancy me
and all the State Troopers would find
 
Is my empty tractor-trailer
broken down, my cab door open
parked haphazardly, on a  red dirt road 
another mystery with no closing.

They say the South will rise again
and on certain nights they do
so you best avoid those red dirt roads
lest the Rebels get you too!

Cause I do believe the ravishing
of sacred battlefields
can stir up sorrows worse than death
not meant to be revealed

In scarlet red dust devils
that raise the ghosts of men
who think their war must still be fought
as their south rises again.

And you can’t convince a spirit
that you meant no harm when you
left tonnage ruts right across their graves
you will become one of them too.

Even freeway often run askew
across the battlefields they knew,
don’t disturb their graves 
or you’ll pay their dues.

I’m waiting on 
hold for an eternity
trying to reach 
my public utility!!??
There’s a cobweb 
growing from my nose
and my ear’s grown sore 
cause it’s juxtaposed
like glue to my cell phone 
and I suppose
I’ll get cancer in my brain 
as radiation flows
before I get a solid answer
to the questions I’ll pose

As the muzak spits and sputters 
and it’s  driving me 
crazy with some skanky 
tune from 1953
I’ve been disconnected twice 
and still put on hold
cause the call volume is higher 
than God’s button holes
and the menu offers nothing 
but a woman who
says “We’re sorry for the delay, 
but we’ll get to you,”
and I swear it’s Lilly Tomlin 
with her nasally voice
but my power is out 
and I have really got no choice.

Cause it’s ten degrees outside 
and I am frozen to the bone
I think I’m getting frostbite 
from my Spamsung phone

And as I sit here I am thinking 
in my coat and gloves
that this situation sadly 
is a lot like love….
you have wants and when you 
finally find the gal you need
she often puts you on hold 
until your sad heart  bleeds
such disconnection's no fun 
but she has to say "yes!"
But her huge volume of calls 
from other guys is a mess
and when you want to share 
your feelings there’s a long menu
on all the things you need to do 
while she considers you.

Often she’ll give the wrong number 
and you’ll call someone
who is eighty five years old 
and was a former nun.
love can be elusive when 
your trying to date 
the most beautiful girl 
who won’t communicate.

she’ll be a Country muzak fan 
but you’re a Rock and Roll dude.

Communication is essential 
when love comes your way
or you wind up home alone 
most every night and day
just waiting for your phone

My power just came on 
and now my cell phones dead

brought all the misery
that I perpetuated on 
Human beings,

longer a part of.

Immobile in my 
shell of flesh
my brain synapses

around the horrors
endlessly refreshed
and the punishments 
that I’ll be blessed with....

The demons wait for me
on the brink of my eternity
and I earned everything 
that will come to be 
After I suffered my brain injury.

I had a taste for women 
that were home alone
I would sneak inside 
in their comfort zone
and use then like a Kleenex
and then toss them away.

and soon I'm gonna pay.

I got caught one night
by a woman who held tight
to a .45 caliber pistol 
as I climbed into her window 
and she shot on sight.

Just enough to put me
in this coma that’s left me
on the menu for demons

Suddenly my eyes 
popped open
and the light in 
my Hospital rooms
flickered and went out

And three hideous demons
who wanted me aware
pulled my spirit down through 
that sterilized floor, 
and I knew I was dead,

But death is not a given
they had a special place
where they’ll violate 
every part of my body
eternally...... 
and nobody

just entered me
and it feels so fiery
possessed by their whims
filled with sadism
Exactly how I use to be.

Karma’s a bitch
