Envision a peaceful, mid-winter Welsh countryside. The snow-covered hills are devoid of human presence, except for one lonely wanderer. As she makes her journey home, snowflakes begin to gently drift to the ground. The crisp snow slowly grows into a brisk flurry and soon enough, blurs her vision. Treading carefully through the blizzard, she continues on, with only her instincts to lead the way. As the snow begins to clear, the outline of her hometown comes into view. Upon returning safely, the storm ceases and the countryside restores its ethereal moonlit glow.

In Contrast (2016) is a short piece with four contrasting movements of distinctive character. The piece utilizes various extended techniques, many of which remain exclusive to one movement or the other. This experimental piece is intended to demonstrate the diverse abilities of the flute.

In Contrast (2016)

"Waves" spans from my memories of the Pacific Ocean. With most of my extended family living in the San Diego area as I grew up, I have many fond memories of the ocean, and Coronado Beach in particular. Since moving to Oregon, my fondness for the ocean has only continued to grow. After taking a road-trip to San Diego with the UO Flute Studio during the summer of 2016, I felt it only appropriate that a piece I dedicate to them be related to a place we've shared that also has personal significance.

Written for the University of Oregon Flute Ensemble.

"In the distant future, but in a world not unlike our own, human and alien peoples inhabit the city of Edimantra. They coexist, but not very well. Humans routinely discriminate against the alien peoples, whom are broadly referred to as Caelans, and true equality is not in sight. In Edimantra lives Seraphyn Wake, a young woman making a living as a private eye. She is by far the best at her trade in the city, and her reputation precedes her. Many wonder how she does it, but none would question her methods. The truth is, Seraphyn has a secret that must not be revealed or else her way of life be changed forever: She is half Caelan although she appears to be human."

From my Seraphyn Wake suite, this movement is mournful and gradually becomes angry as Seraphyn experiences waves of realization regarding her circumstances.

I experimented with some analog synth for the Ludum Dare 44 game jam! 

Hearty the Heart is the protagonist of this platformer in which in which you dodge unhealthy foods to make it back home safely.

Rebecca Larkin is a musical storyteller. As a composer and flutist, her music conveys an unraveling narrative that she and her audience can interpret in any way they wish. 

Inspired by soundtracks and concert music alike, Rebecca writes visual music for the stage and screen. She has been named a finalist for the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer awards and a scholar for the Game Audio Network Guild (GANG). She is an enthusiastic collaborator and constantly seeks opportunities to create new cross-disciplinary work.

An active performer of new music, Rebecca has recently been a featured soloist with the North Country Electronic Music Festival and the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium. Rebecca is the flutist, founder, and director of Wind Speaks, a woodwind centered ensemble that performs music by living composers. From NASA to Steampunk, Wind Speaks performs music that responds to the world we live in. 

Rebecca received her B.M. Flute Performance degree from Ohio Wesleyan University where she studied flute with Nancy Gamso and Randall Hester and composition with Jennifer Jolley and Clint Needham. She recently earned her M.M. Composition degree from the University of Oregon where she studied composition with Robert Kyr and David Crumb and flute with Molly Barth.

When Rebecca is not composing or performing, she is an avid gamer and spends quality time with her rabbit, Oreo.
