Wheels Of Trees And Stars (Binaural Mix)

Teratoma /ter·a·to·ma/ Gr. teraton, or monster] n. A tumor made up of different types of tissue, none of which is native to the area in which it occurs. Teratomas have been reported to contain hair, teeth, bone, and, very rarely, more complex organs or processes such as eyes, torso, and hands, feet, or other limbs. Early beliefs explained the growth as a punishment for cannibalism or adultery with the devil.

Odradek /Od·ra·dek/ At first glance it looks like a flat star-shaped spool for thread, wound with ￼old, broken-off bits of thread, knotted and tangled together. ￼He lurks by turns in the garret, the stairway, the lobbies, the entrance hall. "Well, what's your name?" you ask him. "Odradek," he says. "And where do you live?" "No fixed abode," he says and laughs; but it is only the kind of laughter that has no lungs behind it. (Kafka)

Teratoma, Odradek

"Summit" is a short orchestral piece imbued with a spirit of adventure. Emerging from the opening four-note motif, the music swiftly grows and moves through several different moods, energetic and broad by turns. At its close, we hear the motif's return layered over other themes, rushing up the final ascent to the peak.

"Summit" is written for Ms. Kimcherie Lloyd and the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra.

Colony collapse disorder (CCD) is a phenomenon that is having a serious and negative effect on bee populations in North America and Europe. The disorder occurs when the queen is abandoned by the majority of worker bees, leaving behind a dead colony that can no longer support itself. Bees are the primary pollinator of agricultural products in the United States, with a full third of all agricultural products relying on bee pollination. Needless to say, the rapid death of bees will have untold economic and environmental effects on the US and beyond.

The sounds of the bees are represented by air noise and flutter tongue in the flutes. The other primary material for the piece represents the lamentation. The complex rhythmic relationships between the different parts are strained, and at all times the instruments are in danger of losing touch with one another, collapsing the piece in on itself. 

The primary thematic material is an altered quotation from the piece Kaine for solo flute by Rhys Gates, quoted with the composer’s permission.

This piece was performed at the University of Oregon's Beall Hall in Spring 2016 by Alexis Evers, Sam Golter, Linda Jenkins, Rebecca Larkin, and Robert Wakeley.

"Waves" spans from my memories of the Pacific Ocean. With most of my extended family living in the San Diego area as I grew up, I have many fond memories of the ocean, and Coronado Beach in particular. Since moving to Oregon, my fondness for the ocean has only continued to grow. After taking a road-trip to San Diego with the UO Flute Studio during the summer of 2016, I felt it only appropriate that a piece I dedicate to them be related to a place we've shared that also has personal significance.

Written for the University of Oregon Flute Ensemble.

Premiered and recorded on January 17th 2017 at Beall Concert Hall, Eugene, OR.

Featuring Rachel Nesvig and Paul Cartwright on Hardanger fiddle, Tina Guo on cello, vocals by Christine Hals, Kristin Naigus on various recorders and Tom Strahle on guitars/mandolin.

This is the track that was written for the Runic demo at the Indie Game Developers Association Capitol Creative Showcase.

Runic

Rebecca Larkin is a musical storyteller. As a composer and flutist, her music conveys an unraveling narrative that she and her audience can interpret in any way they wish. 

Inspired by soundtracks and concert music alike, Rebecca writes visual music for the stage and screen. She has been named a finalist for the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer awards and a scholar for the Game Audio Network Guild (GANG). She is an enthusiastic collaborator and constantly seeks opportunities to create new cross-disciplinary work.

An active performer of new music, Rebecca has recently been a featured soloist with the North Country Electronic Music Festival and the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium. Rebecca is the flutist, founder, and director of Wind Speaks, a woodwind centered ensemble that performs music by living composers. From NASA to Steampunk, Wind Speaks performs music that responds to the world we live in. 

Rebecca received her B.M. Flute Performance degree from Ohio Wesleyan University where she studied flute with Nancy Gamso and Randall Hester and composition with Jennifer Jolley and Clint Needham. She recently earned her M.M. Composition degree from the University of Oregon where she studied composition with Robert Kyr and David Crumb and flute with Molly Barth.

When Rebecca is not composing or performing, she is an avid gamer and spends quality time with her rabbit, Oreo.
