Writing this song was a relief. It came in a tough season. It broke a silence, it gave fresh breath to my creativity. Through it I was able to articulate and give a voice to something I've known and felt my whole life, but for the first time bring it out of my subconscious and bring it to life just when I needed to hang on to it the most. It's about the knowing deep down in my gut that in difficult times it's never been, and never will be, complete darkness. There is a hope; sometimes just a whisper, and a light; sometimes just a tiny flame, that is constant, that is unquenchable. What a comfort that is through the inevitable highs and lows of life. The darkness will surround me at times for sure, but it is not ultimate, it is not convincing. There is always light somewhere. Writing this song has helped me hold on to that unquenchable light and focus on its tiny but steady flame, and I hope it does that for you too.⁣

It's not easy to be human sometimes. Life is intricate and complex and so are we.⁣ We stand united in our humanity, yet each one of us is unique. There are a thousand different voices telling us how we should be, how we should feel, what categories we should fit into, what our journeys through life should look like.⁣

Slowly but surely I've been learning to become more comfortable in my own skin, giving myself permission to ignore many of those external voices, to focus on what matters, and to discover the path meant for me. I've been learning more and more that it's okay if my life, my process, my timeline, and my story, doesn't look exactly the same as anyone else's.⁣

I'm grateful for the journey. I'm grateful for the people that have told me that who I am is enough, and that it's okay to be me. That who I am is needed, and loved, and worthy.⁣

So, in case you have not heard this enough in your world, this song is here is here to tell you⁣

Fallow adj.
'Fallow ground, or fallow soil, is land which has been dug or ploughed but left unplanted for a period of time. In other words, fallow land is land left to rest and regenerate, so that its quality or strength has a chance to improve.'

A few years ago I found myself creatively in a season I didn't recognise.
We hear a lot of talk of planting, growing and harvest seasons of life. But this felt like none of those. It felt empty, barren. It felt like all the hard work I'd put in the years before was going to waste.
Then someone told me about 'fallow' seasons - the practise of farmers leaving a field to rest for a period of time without planting it. This practise actually ensures that the ground is able to produce future harvests that are stronger and have a greater yield.
Wow! What a revelation this was - a revelation that didn't take away all the struggles of that season (I'm not the most naturally patient person), but it helped give me hope and see a purpose to this seemingly empty time. It restored some excitement for the future.

And do you know what? Looking back I can now see that what I thought
was completely empty and barren  - wasn't. In that resting land beautiful things still grew. Seeds that became this new EP - beautiful little bonus wildflowers that I never expected.
'The poppy does not need particularly fertile soil, and its seeds and shoots can stand up to direct sunlight and dry conditions. As a result, it is able to grow on barren ground.'

So if you find yourself in a fallow field, I hope this gives you hope. The ground is resting. It is not dead. And I hope it grows you a few poppies whilst you're waiting.
