'Fallow ground, or fallow soil, is land which has been dug or ploughed but left unplanted for a period of time. In other words, fallow land is land left to rest and regenerate, so that its quality or strength has a chance to improve.'

A few years ago I found myself creatively in a season I didn't recognise.
We hear a lot of talk of planting, growing and harvest seasons of life. But this felt like none of those. It felt empty, barren. It felt like all the hard work I'd put in the years before was going to waste.
Then someone told me about 'fallow' seasons - the practise of farmers leaving a field to rest for a period of time without planting it. This practise actually ensures that the ground is able to produce future harvests that are stronger and have a greater yield.
Wow! What a revelation this was - a revelation that didn't take away all the struggles of that season (I'm not the most naturally patient person), but it helped give me hope and see a purpose to this seemingly empty time. It restored some excitement for the future.

And do you know what? Looking back I can now see that what I thought
was completely empty and barren  - wasn't. In that resting land beautiful things still grew. Seeds that became this new EP - beautiful little bonus wildflowers that I never expected.
'The poppy does not need particularly fertile soil, and its seeds and shoots can stand up to direct sunlight and dry conditions. As a result, it is able to grow on barren ground.'

So if you find yourself in a fallow field, I hope this gives you hope. The ground is resting. It is not dead. And I hope it grows you a few poppies whilst you're waiting.
