Bongos, bouzouki and Farfisa organ galore! The explosive cocktail of rock'n'roll and traditional Tsifteteli hailing from 1960's Greece is still alive thanks to Deli Teli: the Marseille-based quartet performs a string of forgotten hits that once set Athens on fire, with a contagious energy and a subtle dose of Mediterranean drama.

Half a century ago, while French seasiders would dance to 'Yéyé' sounds and dig the Beatles or Pink Floyd, a whole other scene was happening further along the coastline. Notably, Greek artists were a huge influence beyond the Mediterranean cradle ; Aris San's version of "Boum Pam" (a.k.a.  "Bros Gremos Kai Piso Rema"), brilliantly interpreted by Deli Teli on this record, was a n°1 hit from Southern Europe to the tip of India!

Far from being an exclusive Greek sound, Tsifteteli music has travelled through borders for centuries and means 'double string' in Turkish. In the 1960's, it mixed with rock'n'roll, surf and Latin-american influences, and gave birth to the typical « Laïko sound.
With their powerful electric bouzouki (Greek lute) and the distinctive sound of the Farfisa organ, Deli Teli have carved their style while digging through the incredible goldmine of the late 60's and early 70's Tsifteteli/Laïko singles. 

The 4 musicians met in 2019 with a burning desire to dive into electric sensations – bassist Christos Karypidis used to play the oud lute and keyboardist Arthur Bacon played accordion in most of his former projects – and made the most of 2020's lockdowns by building their repertoire and thinking up Deli Teli.

On this mini-album, they also interpret Koko's "Chily Chily", a groovy belly-dance mover; "Ekso", an intoxicating and frenetic floor shaker; "Vasilis", a cool organ-lead surfing instrumental; and 2 slightly freer and more psychedelic compostions, "Taksim" (improvised introduction) and "Bournelis", a creative re-arrangement of 2 tracks
by Leonardos Bournelis.

The new album Little Child (2022) starts with a cracker called Inside Outside. The song addresses the hypocrisy and double standards of the European Union when it comes to refugee policy. The group works together with the renowned German/Nigerian musician Ade Bantu and the Angolan guitarist Juresse Amie Tieti Ndombasi and picks up their listeners where they were parked with MAMARI. Fat grooves with clearly recognizable Afrobeat influences.

However, the musical journey leads step by step away from the usual sounds of the band. Already the second track Dansez! Dansez! shows that. The sound leads to Angola, Congo and a bit of Mali. The band stacks so many rhythms on top of each other that the word poly appears in a whole new light. The gifted guitarist Juresse Amie Tieti Ndombasi puts the icing on the cake with his sound.

No=No. Here at last it becomes clear: Muito Kaballa has escaped from his drawer and is now in free flight, somewhere between jazz, fusion, afrobeat and whatever. But who cares? The sound is convincing, the feet shake to the beat and cannot be calmed down even with great effort and the message "Don't protect your daughter, educate your son" can't be said often enough.

The next song, Memories, reveals completely different sides of the band. While the sound is suddenly much more relaxed and, let's call it jazzy, the lyrics also become much more intimate and poetic.

Little Child builds on the mood of the previous track and rounds off the musical odyssey with a good portion of goosebumps. But the song doesn't just leave its mark on the surface, no, it also gets under your skin. While the melody has considerable catchy tune potential, it is above all the lyrics and the message that grab you here. Niklas Mündemann wrote the song during a phase of mental depression. Above all, psychotherapy helped him to think more positively again and to comfort his own inner child. We've all heard about that child in us. But when was the last time we hugged it? The song Little Child is the perfect accompaniment for this, because when you hear it, you immediately feel hugged, pressed and safe. Another highlight are the incredibly beautiful solos, played by Benjamin Schneider on guitar and Saskia-Marleen Dahms on trombone. 

To finish, 4 more remixes for the dancefloor are delivered by French producer Kuna Maze, Polish/Angolan duo Lua Preta, French producer La Dame and Brazilian producer Badsista, tipping the remix balance into female positivity.

Muito Kaballa - Little Child (full album)

From the same spirit that weaves Rebetiko from the ashes of the Ottoman empire to the heavy Hafla soundtracks on the Koliphone label in ‘70s Jaffa, or rebellious Turkish psychedelic music to the first generation of surf guitarist migrants in America. It's an infectious feeling that travelled and evolved wherever it was called, and that passion is embodied in “Back to the Taverna”, the new album by Berlin based bouzouki quintet, Cherry Bandora.

On the milestone of their third release, original members Liad Vanounou (Bouzouki) and Lorena Atrakci (Vocals) have bolstered their sound with longtime friends and collaborators Moshe ‘Moosh’ Lahav on Keyboards and flute, Tamir ‘Hassan’ Chen on Bass and Nimrod Lieberman on Drums to create an album celebrating the ecstasy of being able to drink and perform together again, freed from the anathema of the last years. The band has evolved
considerably since their beginnings ten years ago as an Agean-influenced part of the local Balkan Swing scene; the most significant addition being the deployment of “The Hardest Working Man in Tropical Music” Alex Figueira as musical director for this album. His scorched fingerprints are unmissable throughout the extended psychedelic breakdowns and percussive overdubs that make “Back to the Taverna” such a dynamic offering.

Cherry Bandora have always been a very personal band; collecting songs from nearby cultures and history and blending them into their own experience by developing new arrangements or lyrics, just as musicians from those times would have. Lorena delights in expressing herself away from her mother tongue or providing modern lyrics for an updated feeling, as she does to the beloved Turkish standard, “Rampi Rampi”. In this interpretation she uses her native Hebrew in a saucy lockdown-delivery-guy romance... This track also
features Barış Öner from local Turkish rock band Kara Delik on his signature flanging Saz.

Singing in Greek, English, Turkish and Hebrew was also a natural choice on the album, representing the “multikulti” area of Berlin that the band lives and records in. These languages would all be heard on the street as they walked to record in the analog Studio Wong in Kreuzberg.

The opening track, The Sound Of Baglama, is an interpretation of the anthemic Tsitsanis homage to the tavernas and sweethearts of Thessaloniki. It lays the ground for what to expect from Cherry Bandora’s exceptional live performances, featuring effortless switch-ups between surf rock choruses and laid-back verses dipping into Persian disco funk. This song will be accompanied by a tour-collage “found footage” style film clip in production at this time.

Cherry Bandoras show their dedication to the bit with a rousing English version of the canonical rembetiko tune Dimitroula Mou. This amour song, popular with generations of female singers, is accompanied by real studio plate smashing, a ritual which sealed their final session for the album.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl as a collaboration between Rebel Up Records (Belgium) and Rumi Sounds (Berlin) on Friday 3 november 2023 and is a prime example of what a raunchy, open minded and tireless bouzouki band can do as they hit their prime.

Opening the remix EP, Hungarian producer and DJ ‘Hataah’ delivers a Global Bass version of quality and intensity commensurate with his multiple @babylon-records releases. Easily identifiable as a song originating from Hataah, the tune brims with joyful interactions between synth sounds while allowing the vocals to maintain a centre stage in the mix. The clear focus in terms of drums and arrangement is to ensure the song is as fun and danceable as possible . We are incredibly happy to open our remix EP with this eclectic, energetic and fun sounding version of Umoya!

Catu Diosis
Ugandan Producer, DJ and Nyege Nyege collective member, Catu Diosis delivers an Umoya edit blending Afro House, Tribal Tech and Gqom. She has also very creatively resampled Toya’s powerful vocals to add more raw emotion to the remix. Catu Diosis Afro-centric and highly danceable remix is a reflection of her free spirited, energetic, forward thinking work as an artist.

Kasbah
Nadir Moussaoui aka KasbaH’s remix of Umoya has truly allowed the busy producer to be emotionally expressive and to create a laid back, yet powerful version that shines for its beautiful simplicity and incredible layering of sounds. It’s a true honour to have had Kasbah made space for our Umoya remix, within his seemingly non-stop schedule of music releases and live shows.

Waggles
It does not require a lot of guestwork in regards to where Waggles sound and influence may originate from, after listening to his rendition of UMOYA. With this remix, the Bristol producer blends his influence of UK garage and breaks, with the super Afro/Zulu vocals of Toya. Carthnage had some huge Middle Eastern inspired atmospheres, flutes and synths, which added an element of Arabian psychedelia to his Afro-breaks remix.

Dead Stare
Last but not least, we are very pleased to have received this Umoya remix by our friends from the Hungarian/Mexican duo Dead Stare. This is a slowed-down, chugging, heavy, low-centre gravity and lysergic version of the Umoya track, to give an fenomenal closing to our remix EP, which we are very happy to share with the wider community of Global Underground music lovers.

The song Mamari is the title song to the forthcoming album of the same name by Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble from Cologne, Germany, which will be released at end of May on outernational Brussels label Rebel Up Records. It represents the vast musical development of the Muito Kaballa project since the release of the first album 'Everything is Broke' in 2019 on German label Switchstance Recordings.  

Mamari is a song with a groove heart that moves forward fast and at the same time stumbles. Like riding a bike with bent wheels or like the way how camels move, which is called the pace gait, or in arabic: Mamari.

Muito Kaballa, also known as Niklas Mündemann, started out as a one-man show on the streets and quickly gained attention through his loopstation performances. After the recording of the first album Niklas Mündemann wanted to move away from the entertainer image and explore new musical ideas. When he met musician Jan Janzen, the two instantly decided to create a band and take the project to the next level. The band now consists members Nora Beisel on vocals, André van der Heide on drums, Leonard Gaab on percusscions, Marie Tjong-Ayong on trumpet and flugelhorn (replaced recently with Lilli Thomas on trumpet), Till Weise on bass, Benjamin Schneider on guitar, Tim von Malotki on baritone sax, Jan Janzen on keys and Niklas Mündemann on tenor sax, flute and synthesizer.

The single An Kôri from the upcoming album Reele Bumbou (19 Feb), features the Burkinabé mouth bow (arc-à-bouche) which accompanies Kaito Winse's low and serious voice, irremediably plunging his audience into a meditative trance. The words, brief and swirling, whisper in the ear of the listener, with an advice to prefer the soup of wisdom, patience and good will, which is more delicious than the soup of stupidity, even if we know that it is good and amusing.
It was composed for a theater show by Aurélie Lierman, its scales are imbued with the poetry of an imminent past.

Ending with Angolan producer DJ Znobia with his kuduro and tarraxo productions, Lisbon trio Blacksea Nao Maya and their afro batida bass sounds, and an african bass compilation from the island of Mayotte in Indian ocean via Kayamba records. The three Iraqi musicians of Babylon Trio arrived in Belgium in 2015 and 2016 as refugees of the political unrest in Iraq. Arkan Mushtak hails from Baghdad, where since his childhood he has been shaped into a talented keyboard/piano player by Iraqi master composer Noor Sabah. He is accompanied by fellow musicians Saif Al-Qaissy (digital percussion, djarbouka and backing vocals), Walaa Saad (vocals) and occasionally Mohammed Algareb (guest percussion). Together they play an electrified mix of contemporary Iraqi music styles, such as chobi chobi, dabke, maqam and electronic hybrids that put the dancefloor on fire. After the summer, the trio will release their debut album titled 'Habibi' on Brussels label Rebel Up Records, with the help of Rebel Up, NGHE, cultural venue Les Ateliers Claus and Angstrom studio in Brussels. This year will mark the rise of the contemporary Iraqi street sound throughout Belgium and beyond. Get ready for fire!

Music without Constraints.

In times when every aspect of life seems to be a ‘product’, it’s difficult to imagine that for centuries music was made for a different reason. That music was a way for people to express themselves and their feelings about the world they lived in: their joys, their desires, their anger and pain, without an ulterior motive.

The musician and the author, the painter and the actor were the jesters and critics of their times, holding up a mirror to society. Or they simply added to the fun and the party atmosphere. But never on command, even though they were paid for their service. They held on to their freedom. For artists, freedom is the highest goal.

Much has changed since the industrial revolution and capitalism turned society upside down in the twentieth century. So-called ‘popular music’ no longer was spontaneous folk, jazz or classical tunes that just happened to become popular with the people, but became music created by the entertainment industry on the basis of templates for sentimentality and amusement.

Occii in Amsterdam is one of these stations, already for more than 25 years. It’s a free port for all kinds of music that don’t fit the commercial entertainment template. And it will be clear that they won’t be mainstream pop. It’s folk and grass roots music from around the world. It’s jazz and improvised music, rooted in freedom. It’s punk, based on anger and spontaneity. And that is precisely the music presented on this LP, recorded at Occii and other cultural oases in Amsterdam.

Like freedom, music doesn’t have constraints. The record opens with Zea and Afework Nigussie, a Dutchman and an Ethiopian, singing a topical American folk blues song from the early twentieth century. Then Les Filles de Illighadad from Niger and Ghanese kologo champion King Ayisobo take over, simply to prove that music is a language that is understood around the world.

Improvisation-based rock band Kurws from Poland presents a piece from their album ‘Alarm’, anticipating the B side of the LP, which opens with a fifteen-minute explosion of energy and creativity by Cinema Soloriens. Filmmaker and musician James Harrar and Marshall Allen – the cosmic Sun Ra’s musical right hand for almost half a century – with the help of a few more like-minded souls aim straight for the stars in ‘The Man who Married the Moon’.

The record ends on some drops of healthy, undiluted punk. Rhode Island’s Dropdead and Dutch veterans LäRM with former Rondos frontman Johannes ‘Red Rat’ van de Weert as a guest singer. ‘Every day is a new start’ says Rooie Waas’ Gijs Borstlap. It’s something to remember. Like Dropdead singer Bob Otis’ words on this LP: ‘If one voice can change the future, then what can a hundred voices do? Or a thousand?’ In other words: Do It Yourself, All Together.

Influenced by juke, footwork, dubstep, afrohouse, gqom and amapiano vibes, 808 Bantou is a versatile producer of fresh African electronic sounds. This remix comes in an amapiano vibe, referrring to the South African deep house sound.
