Bongos, bouzouki and Farfisa organ galore! The explosive cocktail of rock'n'roll and traditional Tsifteteli hailing from 1960's Greece is still alive thanks to Deli Teli: the Marseille-based quartet performs a string of forgotten hits that once set Athens on fire, with a contagious energy and a subtle dose of Mediterranean drama.

Half a century ago, while French seasiders would dance to 'Yéyé' sounds and dig the Beatles or Pink Floyd, a whole other scene was happening further along the coastline. Notably, Greek artists were a huge influence beyond the Mediterranean cradle ; Aris San's version of "Boum Pam" (a.k.a.  "Bros Gremos Kai Piso Rema"), brilliantly
interpreted by Deli Teli on this record, was a n°1 hit from Southern Europe to the tip of India!

Far from being an exclusive Greek sound, Tsifteteli music has travelled through borders for centuries and means 'double string' in Turkish. In the 1960's, it mixed with rock'n'roll, surf and Latin-american influences, and gave birth to the typical « Laïko sound.
With their powerful electric bouzouki (Greek lute) and the distinctive sound of the Farfisa organ, Deli Teli have carved their style while digging through the incredible goldmine of the late 60's and early 70's Tsifteteli/Laïko singles. 

The 4 musicians met in 2019 with a burning desire to dive into electric sensations – bassist Christos Karypidis used to play the oud lute and keyboardist Arthur Bacon played accordion in most of his former projects – and made the most of 2020's lockdowns by building their repertoire and thinking up Deli Teli.

On this mini-album, they also interpret Koko's "Chily Chily", a groovy belly-dance mover; "Ekso", an intoxicating and frenetic floor shaker; "Vasilis", a cool organ-lead surfing instrumental; and 2 slightly freer and more psychedelic compostions, "Taksim" (improvised introduction) and "Bournelis", a creative re-arrangement of 2 tracks
by Leonardos Bournelis.

It does not require a lot of guess work in regards to where Waggles sound and influence may originate from, after listening to his rendition of Umoya. With this remix, the Bristol producer blends his influence of UK garage and breaks, with the super Afro/Zulu vocals of Toya. Carthnage had some huge Middle Eastern inspired atmospheres, flutes and synths, which added an element of Arabian psychedelia to his Afro-breaks remix.

Ugandan Producer, DJ and Nyege Nyege collective member, Catu Diosis delivers an Umoya edit blending Afro House, Tribal Tech and Gqom. She has also very creatively resampled Toya’s powerful vocals to add more raw emotion to the remix. Catu Diosis Afro-centric and highly danceable remix is a reflection of her free spirited, energetic, forward thinking work as an artist.

Opening the remix EP, Hungarian producer and DJ ‘Hataah’ delivers a Global Bass version of quality and intensity commensurate with his multiple @babylon-records releases. Easily identifiable as a song originating from Hataah, the tune brims with joyful interactions between synth sounds while allowing the vocals to maintain a centre stage in the mix. The clear focus in terms of drums and arrangement is to ensure the song is as fun and danceable as possible . We are incredibly happy to open our remix EP with this eclectic, energetic and fun sounding version of Umoya!

Albums of the month with Belgian folk/jazz collective Auster Loo, Liam Bailey and his warm UK/Jamaican roots reggae/soul/rock sound, Jamaican duo Groundsound and they post-roots/dancehall sound and Ghanaian/German band Jembaa Groove and their highlife jazz. A compilation on female music groups from 1980’s Gabon, activist singer Sahra Halgan from Somaliland and her East African desert rock, griot trance rock trio Avalanche Kaito in Burkinabé vibes, an electronic Moroccan Dutch gnawa collaboration by Saad Tiouly & Prace. Closing in electronic vibes with Balkan band ShazaLaKazoo and their bouncy sound, Spanish electro collaboration between duo Za! and flamenco singer Perrate and ending with DJ Kolt from Lisboa and his batida afrotech.

Our albums of the month start with Italian jazz composer Rosa Brunello, Los Angeles jazz group SML and their experimental jazz sounds, 77 year old Brazilian singer Catia de França and her alternative tropical rock and latin group Conjunto Papa Upa in Venezuelan styles. Followed by Japanese afrobeat funk group Ajate, the compilation Elsewhere CC of tropical grooves and experimental summer sounds, Singer/producer Tamada and his Georgian electronic vibes, Ukrainian producer The Lazy Jesus and his heavy folk bass, Moroccan/French duo Alright Mela and their maghreb electronic clubbing sounds, French producer Ozferti and his Ethio inspired electonics, Malian MC Waraba in collaboration with club producers and Brazilian baile bass producer Vhoor. The single An Kôri from the upcoming album Reele Bumbou (19 Feb), features the Burkinabé mouth bow (arc-à-bouche) which accompanies Kaito Winse's low and serious voice, irremediably plunging his audience into a meditative trance. The words, brief and swirling, whisper in the ear of the listener, with an advice to prefer the soup of wisdom, patience and good will, which is more delicious than the soup of stupidity, even if we know that it is good and amusing.
It was composed for a theater show by Aurélie Lierman, its scales are imbued with the poetry of an imminent past.

Continuing with Belgian group Black Flower who return with their global jazz & grooves, Marcelo D2 & Sambadrive with Brazilian rap with samba, Peruvian group Novalima mixes Afro Peruvian traditions with electronic production, Geneva trio AMAMI brings bouncy afro & caribbean infused sounds. Ending with Angolan producer DJ Znobia with his kuduro and tarraxo productions, Lisbon trio Blacksea Nao Maya and their afro batida bass sounds, and an african bass compilation from the island of Mayotte in Indian ocean via Kayamba records. The three Iraqi musicians of Babylon Trio arrived in Belgium in 2015 and 2016 as refugees of the political unrest in Iraq. Arkan Mushtak hails from Baghdad, where since his childhood he has been shaped into a talented keyboard/piano player by Iraqi master composer Noor Sabah. He is accompanied by fellow musicians Saif Al-Qaissy (digital percussion, djarbouka and backing vocals), Walaa Saad (vocals) and occasionally Mohammed Algareb (guest percussion). Together they play an electrified mix of contemporary Iraqi music styles, such as chobi chobi, dabke, maqam and electronic hybrids that put the dancefloor on fire. After the summer, the trio will release their debut album titled 'Habibi' on Brussels label Rebel Up Records, with the help of Rebel Up, NGHE, cultural venue Les Ateliers Claus and Angstrom studio in Brussels. This year will mark the rise of the contemporary Iraqi street sound throughout Belgium and beyond. Get ready for fire!

Scúru Fitchádu is the band fronted by Cap Verdian-Portuguese musician Marcus Veiga from Almada, just across the river Tejo of Lisbon. Their sound is a spiced mash of electropunk, breakcore and funana where Veiga plays the accordeon and ferro to drench his Cap Verdian roots over dark electronic beats. Almost like an Atari Teenage Riot reïncarnated into an Afro Portuguese soul. Sharp edged like the sound of the knife on the iron. ‘Manus Planus Danus’ is a rough adage to the problems of mankind and comes from the debut album ‘Un Kuzu Runhu’.
