Aiko Takahashi - Vases À Iris

Treadwater Fury comes in a lathe cut record edition of just 40 copies. This album is a  hauntologically tinged and soundtrack-centric paean to family and small town England from British musician, Poppy H.

Leaning heavily into folk, ambient and modern classical, and retaining the same long production model, he used a smartphone to capture improv, compositions, and field recordings, and then mixed and mastered the album on the same device.

As explained by the artist himself...

"The album is, to a large degree, about family and the east end of London where I'm from. I feel guilt about having distanced myself from the people and places of my childhood. My mum was one of three sisters, their dad died when she was 17 (everyone called him Poppy - hence my pseudonym) - and I was very close to their mum/my nan who herself died relatively young. So, the record is about losing the first of my uncles on my mums side, and how it compelled me to evoke an imagined image of post-war London (when they were born) - and with it a darkness, melancholy but also a bittersweet nostalgia."

Note = Autonomous recorder running during 24h. This extract features loud clicks by snapping shrimps, knocking sounds by damselfishes, boomy sounds probably by Pomacanthus Semicirculatus. Depth approx. 2-3 meters, high tide, about one week after a typhoon. Please use headphones or decent loudspeakers.

Although I have enjoyed the music of Japan and David Sylvian since the mid eighties, I only heard 'Gone to Earth' for the first time in December 2009. Initially I thought it was a bit old and not relevant anymore, but soon it touched me and I played it a lot. Because of its beautifull sound 'Answered Payers' became one of my favorites. Later I felt that I could create a more earthly context for it. So I added a bassline and percussion and played some guitar on top of that. All parts were recorded around the first minute of the original. I enjoyed doing this remix and I'm happy with the result.
