The Story  ᓚᘏᗢ  ➜
The first thing that woke was the treeline—a black seam of evergreens stitched across the horizon like a scar on the world’s throat. It wasn’t a forest so much as a silhouette-memory of a forest, a line drawn by something that had once known soil and wind and decided those were optional.

The second thing that woke was the obsidian ground, a wet glass-sand plain that reflected everything a heartbeat late. Teal light pooled in its ripples. Every grain carried a microglint, as if the dark had been crushed out of fallen stars and poured across the land.

And then, with the slow inevitability of a moon rising, the third thing woke:

A lion—colossal, cosmic, and impossibly still.

Its body was not fur and bone but a guardian-shape made of midnight density, rimmed with molten gold and magenta sparks. Its mane unfurled in ribbons—aurora-strands and smoky filaments that braided and unbraided with a quiet intelligence. The ribbons didn’t merely glow; they contained. Within each flowing strip ran miniature lives: panthers made of ink-bright shadow, foxes formed from flame-sand, owls with spiral pupils, serpents with comet tails, moth-kings wearing crowns of pollen-light.

If you stared long enough, you realized the mane was a highway system for tiny mythic creatures—an entire moving ecology threaded into the lion’s halo. They raced and circled and nested: creatures inside creatures inside creatures, recursion without end, like reality had learned to fold itself.

The lion’s eyes opened.

Not eyes—doorways.

Oval portals, perfectly smooth, their rims edged in cyan and gold. Where a pupil should be, there was depth: corridors within corridors, ringed thresholds, stairways that receded into impossible interiors. Tiny processions marched through those inner halls—animal spirits wearing masks of other animals, their forms shifting with every step.

At the edge of the glass-sand plain, a figure stood small enough to be mistaken for a glitch in the reflection.

It was humanoid—yes, but not human. Its skin was a deep mineral matte, like basalt that had learned how to breathe. Along its arms, star-marks drifted beneath the surface, forming and unforming constellations. Its head was crowned with a thin halo of floating bone-needles that rotated in slow orbit, each needle tipped with a trembling bead of light.

This was Veyl, the Parade-Scribe—an alien priest of thresholds, keeper of the unwritten taxonomy. Veyl carried no book. Veyl carried a mask: a lion mask carved from black glass, its eyeholes empty and hungry.
