Our premiere, @g-twentythree + @rivetadam's 'Loose Dogs Brexperiment' is a sanctioned rave-invoker, throbbing to the iterative attacks of rewinding snares and sliced-and-diced vox hooks. Yet it's the oversimplified three-note drips - like stalactites forming over a deep, heavy-battered phreatic lake - that will get you coming back to it and hammer the repeat button like a caveman tossed in a feverish free-party. Massive.

Music is my escape. When life don't treat you right, music always will. But it also can be used as a powerful tool to advocate change. I feel an artist should reflect the current events of their era. I have always used my platform for speaking out vocally and musically.

“We want to show you what we love about music without any other boundaries than our own restless minds.” - With this vision Berlin-based Kepler, DJ Uta and Sarah Farina (later joined by LUZ1E) formed the collective and event series Rec Room in 2013, which focuses on electronic music from the Bass music spectrum and is all about breaking genre-boundaries in club music and culture.

Rec Room presents its first release Roots, Space, Vision Vol. 1 compiling ten tracks from exceptional artists who represent our vision of an intergenerational, inclusive and intersectional feminist future, dance floor and global music community. This compilation is a musical reflection of their regular club night at Berlin’s “Ohm” venue and ranges from Jungle to Baltimore Club music and features unique producers from around the globe who translate their stories into sonic journeys.

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 / 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸?
I had a ridiculously fun time making this track for Rec Room's compilation! I've always wanted to release a conceptual dance track, and I think this is such a good example of how many genres - breakbeat, bass, trance, RnB, and even pop music - influence my work. I love the lyric, "You don't get to use me". I sampled it from a late night jam session I had with several talented AF friends/musicians on a warm summer night in Oakland, CA. The words are reminiscent of  a declaration to someone or something that is trying to take a special part of you, but hellll no! You just don't get to use me like that. But on the other side of the coin, it's still flavored and kinda sexy in tandem with the rhythmic bassline and rave-like trance elements, so perhaps the words are more of a tease... I'll leave that up to the listener to decide. ;)

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
So many things! Sweaty, early morning renegades in parking garages or next to glistening, calm ocean water. Feeling stuck or alone during times of trial and isolation. Remembering the feeling of infatuation, the feeling of loss. Bells and swirling pads of jazz chords... to name a few. My music has been impacted by my classical training as well as many  hours of tirelessly trying to figure out how to get a synth or kick drum juuuuuust right in my DAW. I have so many people, memories, and other musicians to thank for making my music how it is today. 

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹?
I've had such a complicated relationship with music! It started off at a young age, singing and fiddling around on the piano at my grandmother's house. I then started playing the French Horn and went on to study French Horn performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for college. During that time, I signed up for an introductory Ableton course which absolutely changed my life - I just fell in love. I only took that one class and the rest is history! Everything I've learned in regards to producing since then is self-taught or through community learning, and I'm so lucky to have a group of talented and supportive friends and teachers here in the Bay Area. Producing music gave me a sense of creativity and independence that I had never experienced before, and trust me, I was craving it for so very long. As a listener to many genres of music, I felt inspired to blend many aspects of all of the music I listened to - be it hip hop, jazz, footwork, RnB, electronic, or classical - which has brought me to this Xyla sound that I'm proud and hella excited to share with my loved ones and the world.

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 / 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸?
I usually don’t start with a certain concept. Every track is just a caption of the actual moment. I am open to conceptual projects, and telling stories, but right now, a single track can‘t serve this purpose.

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
Hm, I have a lot of fun with messing around with elements from different genres, which could be interpreted as bringing different (sub)cultures together in some way, which even shows parallels to my biography, but that’s nothing I newly invented, or where I feel the urge overinterpret or bring to a very personal level. From my viewpoint, it just seems to mirror the common process of the development of all the diverse outcomes (in form, style, genre, etc.) in music throughout history, in general.  I really got into experimenting and playing around with sound synthesis. Love the benefits of living in an era, where there is a huge accessibility of information through the WWW. It’s so convenient to dig into a specific subject and learn new stuff. What’s also great is, that it’s so affordable, sustainable and cheap to try out new things with emulators/VSTs first, before getting hands on expensive or room taking hardware. The almost endless possibilities with new easily available technologies might appear overwhelming at first, but can be wonderfully freeing and motivating, and I hope others see this as an invitation too, to start getting creative in any form. Of course, many of these perks apply to many other art forms (or even sciences).  On a technical side, other smart artists, I admire. (Sometimes I try to recreate a specific sound I like and think would fit into my productions, but in the end I always end up with something completely different haha, yeah, but that’s quite a common thing, I guess?)

➔ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹?
Expression and communication. Through music I found a new way, besides words, to capture and express a current state of my mood. Overall, having a creative output helps me coping with feelings, which makes it easier to reflecting on my thoughts. I noticed my lacking ability of expression, which kind of increased while growing up. As a result, I somehow felt disconnected from everything. So for me starting to be a creator and opening up, sharing my work (after being already a listener, clubber and collector for a long time) means participating in an exchange with others on a new level and reconnecting with my surroundings, which helped me gain a lot of life quality back.  From the perspective as a listener, I appreciate the educational and cultural aspects it can bring with. It helped me draw a connection and developed an understanding between historical events, sociological dynamics and my biography; for example, when I tried to dig deeper into Vietnamese culture, my origins and roots with diaspora immigrant parents, music was one of the key tools that helped me to get into this topic. It is interesting and fascinating to see, how political and environmental circumstances can shape a sound, and in reverse what sound can portray.  I notice the potentially empowering capability music culture can have, for both, artists and listeners.  It also can be very sweet and fun, when you find yourself in a lovely, supporting community, regardless whether as an artist or a listener.

NYC's Sorry Records has had an epic year with stand-alone releases from Escaflowne, SPACEGH0ST, DJ Wawa, C Powers, Darian, Matt FX, Tony G, and Malik da Freek among others. Not to mention the guest appearances from the likes of Ma Sha Ru, Amal, Drummy, Huey Mnemonic, Ali Berger, Kush Jones, and DJ Swisha. Despite everything going on around them, they’ve continued to smash it each release, beaming through the dust, and now round off 2020 with a bouncy, uplifting deep house record from Scottish NYC-based DJ, producer and saxophonist Panooc. Going full circle on this one, one of the founders of Sorry Records met Panooc on the dancefloor a year ago whilst Fatherhood was DJing and here we are, a year later releasing ‘Softie’ EP featuring a remix from none other than Fatherhood themselves. 

Panooc has been a lifelong devotee to the global queer dance underground, putting out records for the better part of a decade on a diverse selection of labels such as New York house music institutions King Street Sounds and Nite Grooves, dance powerhouse Ultra Records (Sony), and underground DIY platforms such as QRTR’s Wavcave. They’re currently a resident of gender non-comforting, women & allies DJ collective and party XOXA and have played at globally renowned institutions Tresor, Rye Wax, Good Room, and Dalston Superstore.

Slated for release on the 18th December, the lead track ‘Chem Trails’ draws from a jacking, old school sound, destined for peak time dance floor shutter moments. The ever so playful artwork for ‘Softie’ encapsulates the intimate, colourful, and joyous feeling of the EP perfectly.
