Recess mixes are always inspired by real life, ideas and journeys we have been through, and feel most people can relate to. 
With this one, the inspiration was a bit more specific and personal, as M.Cat very recently was physically assaulted by someone who claimed to truly care for her.

"I vowed to not be silent about this, for silence perpetuates violence - silence kills. I am one of the lucky ones - so to speak - for I am alive, I am safe, I am well resourced with friends, therapists, practitioners, and I have artistic outlets for processing the trauma I am continuing to bear- namely telling my story through this mix."
This mix flutters and wavers between infatuation and being completely terrified, confusion and clarity, loneliness and self determination. 
"It was a mess, I was a mess, and that’s ok; being messy is ok. I’m going to use this platform to say that no one should ever treat anyone the way that I have been treated, no one should be so deceitful and manipulative that they leave murky waters of disempowerment in their wake. I’ve had my dignity crushed, my bones broken, and my heart shattered to pieces. I'm putting my pieces back together, in a new and beautiful way. To all of those who have hurt me: I am stronger in spite of you."

We know this story is not unique, this sort of thing is all too common. To those who are hurting please seek help. We encourage you all to courageously step forward into a new path, one asserted boundary at a time.

How do we keep going?
Hurricanes crush cities leaving refugees in their wake. Wars stomp out languages and change the way we talk about the world. Forests burn to the ground while mountains melt forever. Schools close and teachers are forgotten, their valuable lessons are never taught again. And yet we keep on keeping on. Throughout tragedy and despair there remains a yearning to live, a burning to move through hardship to connect with each other and ourselves; telling stories with our bodies, souls swaying together to the beat. Throughout it all there’s a beat. The beat to wake us in the morning to start afresh again. The beat rousing us from a daydream, propelling us from the mundane toward the novel. There’s a beat that greets us in the club, with laughter over heard while banter is shared. It accompanies us home, it lulls us to sleep. As long as the beat continues a generation is born to pick up the torch and march into another day.

Since the first slave was stolen from the shores of the Africa, Black People have never known equality. For true equality to be obtained equity must be provided; white people need to step down from privilege and use our platform to amplify Black Voices. We must ensure greater opportunity, more access, and most of all we must listen to Black Voices and Needs. Recess has listened to the requests of Black People in our community and vow to not only be allies but also a megaphone. 

We know this isn’t about us, this is about amplifying Black Voices, and raising funds to be distributed by Black Hands to Black People. Every song on this mix has been created by Black Artists to celebrate Black Voices in showing that their art and their stories matter, because they DO matter. Black Lives Matter. Black Voices Matter. Black Lives Matter

People speak of the roaring 20’s with such allure and romance; highlighting the music, the parties and the reckless abandon while ignoring the hardships that led to that overwhelming need to connect and let loose.  Now, here we are in the 20’s again, and just like 100 years ago we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic, forced to keep to ourselves thus lacking that daily connection. Times are hard, people are exhausted, and the future is uncertain- but the pulse within us remains.  The magnetism of a steady groove or a throbbing bassline still pulls at our soul. We may not be gathering in sweaty rooms right now but the new 20’s have just begun. Music still has the power to synchronize us- even when apart- to lift our spirits and move us as one.  Fan the flames, ride the tide, move to the rhythm. Pulse.
