How do we keep going?
Hurricanes crush cities leaving refugees in their wake. Wars stomp out languages and change the way we talk about the world. Forests burn to the ground while mountains melt forever. Schools close and teachers are forgotten, their valuable lessons are never taught again. And yet we keep on keeping on. Throughout tragedy and despair there remains a yearning to live, a burning to move through hardship to connect with each other and ourselves; telling stories with our bodies, souls swaying together to the beat. Throughout it all there’s a beat. The beat to wake us in the morning to start afresh again. The beat rousing us from a daydream, propelling us from the mundane toward the novel. There’s a beat that greets us in the club, with laughter over heard while banter is shared. It accompanies us home, it lulls us to sleep. As long as the beat continues a generation is born to pick up the torch and march into another day.
