For the forth instalment of the WM Guest Mix Series we have Serbian Techno maestro, Miloš Martinov (aka LAG) with a mind-bending journey of 'insert the type of  convoluted nonsense that DJ Mag would write to describe something deadly'!

My first encounter with Lag was back in 2016 when I purchased his 'Unrest' vinyl  on Them UK:  https://thisislag.bandcamp.com/album/unrest-them
It was so refreshingly good and different, and hard, and funky. Sold!

Lag's techno mixes are just that - different, hard and funky. Technically superb and brave, mixing on four CDjs and continuously pushing the mix which makes for an interesting listening while also wanting to go nuts on the dancefloor.

Lag has had numerous releases on MORD and other great labels and has had mixes for Resident Advisor, Hate, DJ Mag, Slam Radio and Reclaim Your City to name a few. His last gig pre-COVID was in Berghain and he's gagging to get back out there to blow roofs off joints!

Rebecca Goldberg is a producer, live performer, DJ and graphic designer from Detroit. Since her debut EP, 313 Acid Queen, she has been affiliated with the multidisciplinary arts collective, Detroit Underground. Rebecca is a seasoned radio DJ having mixed for FM and internet-radio shows hosted across the globe. She has released music and multimedia projects ranging from Detroit techno to avant garde electronic music. Carrying with her the tradition of Detroit Techno, Goldberg tours internationally as a DJ and live performer and has been featured at notable events from Detroit’s seminal Movement Festival to Tresor in Berlin.

The long timer Parisian dj @romainbno has always nourished a special interest for the original hip hop. Here is the result of a long investigation through this particular era of the musical genre, 85-86.
When you think about the words Dj and Paris then at some point Romain Bno will always come out. From his teenage years working as a salesman in the first Paris record shop of house and techno « BPM », selling records to all those who will become famous later, to his residency at Respect in the 90’s, his world tour with Dimitri From Paris, his edits and his online radio show radiororo, Romain Bno is now a resident dj at a hype Paris club and runs a monthly radio show on Rinse.fr, still moved by a genuine passion for music, all music, including the newest ones. Ask him about vocal jazz from the 30’s, check his italo sets before italo got cool again or hear him talking about the last hits of US hip hop or underground techno.

Justin K. Broadrick’s output is an intimidating one. He began, aged 15, with the recording of his first and last record with Napalm Death. From there he formed pioneering industrial metal group Godflesh. He also met Kevin Martin, AKA The Bug, and began experimenting with everything from dub and techno to hip-hop, breakbeat as Techno Animal. Together they produced four albums, plus a collaboration with Porter Ricks.

JK Flesh debuted in 2012 with the album ‘Posthuman’ on 3BY3, but it’s lineage can be traced right back to Kevin “K-Mart” Martin and the pair’s psychedelic industrial techno project, The Sidewinder, which was picked up by Mille Plateaux in 1996. The studio pet-name would later become his alter-ego, as Broadrick explained to Resident Advisor in a 2012 interview: ” JK Flesh is the angry, hateful, disenchanted side of what I do with electronic beat-driven/bass-driven music.”

There’s been the stinging ‘Worship Is The Cleansing Of The Imagination’ since, a split with Prurient, and this year’s ‘Suicide Estate’ EP on Hospital Productions. Electric Deluxe had the honour of bringing the next JK Flesh album kicking and screaming into the world – “Rise Above” was released in June 2016, and displayed a move towards a new form of sludge industrial techno. Legendary techno label Downwards, put out the ‘Nothing Is Free’ 12″ single next, complete with Surgeon remix. Forthcoming releases on Hospital Productions, Downwards and Inner Surface, besides others, are next to come in 2017.

“The Brummie noise legend returns. It was only a few days ago that we were treated to Justin Broadrick’s ‘Nothing Is Free’ EP, a short 12′′ under the JK Flesh moniker that saw him team up with industrial techno don Surgeon. Now, Broadrick has revealed his latest full-length statement in the shape of sprawling 2LP Rise Above. The album will be released on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe imprint, and continues Broadrick’s recent excursions into the dark recesses of club music. The doomy, distorted grind of Godflesh and Jesu is certainly still present, but woven into a wheezing 4/4 template that doesn’t sound a million miles from Andy Stott’s patented “knackered house” or a Surgeon record on the wrong speed being played through a broken car stereo. Swede Peder Mannerfelt makes music that is hard to categorise. And whether producing for Fever Ray and Blonde Redhead or serving up albums and EPs on Archives Intérieures and Hinge Finger, he is fiercely inventive. From experimental tribal concept music like his The Swedish Congo Record to the disassembled and goth-tinged techno rhythms of his latest, Controlling Body, he always pushes boundaries in bold new ways. He is an artist who likes to forget what he knows and go with his instincts, and it has resulted in a body or work that is truly beguiling. 

His mix for our series is just as esoteric. It is a two hour collage that starts of as a voodooistic brew of shamanistic rituals, abstract noise and kinked techno that takes you to a dark foreign world. From there there are some more traditional passages of drum rhythms and wild machine-made sounds as well as diversions into plenty more uncategorizable sonic spheres thanks to tracks from the likes of Pinch, Errorsmith, Vatican Shadow, Machine Woman, Umfang and tens more. It’s music as warfare, as cinema, as experimentation, and it sounds like nothing else out there.

One of my most favourite record labels became 20 this year. Hospital Productions was founded in 1998 when Dominick Fernow was 16 years old. Cassettes and CDrs were released in its early years, many of Fernow's own creations under the name Prurient, as well as various local acts. Fernow is a prolific artist recording under numerous aliases including Vatican Shadow, Fernow is best known for his dark and abrasive musical output under the stage name Prurient.

Over the next year (Nov 2017 – 2018) Electronic Explorations will be celebrating 10 years. 10 years of publishing music by Rob Booth's most favourite artists and labels. For this 10th anniversary celebration Booth has approached those labels that have kept the quality high, those labels that Booth has a close connection too. Hospital Productions kicks the Label Series off - and what better timing with the label celebrating their own 20 year milestone.

His first release including quality tracks like ‘I Am Alone’ ‘Substance’ and ‘Power of love quickly’ got support from the likes of Marcel Dettmann, Setaoc Mass, Endlec, Perc, Truss and more. Born in the late 80’s and influenced by underground music and turntableism, little is known about this mysterious Rome-based techno figure. His underground project can best be described as dark, industrial and aggressive Techno with plenty of broken beats and intense synth textures.
