Before Recognition Recordings emerged, even as an idea, there were experiments in rhythms conducted by Jacek Sienkiewicz in his first bedroom “studio”. “Recognition Zero” brings together some of these tracks, recorded around 1996 without any sequencer, utilising only two machines and some noisy field recordings. 

“Recognition Zero” will be available exclusive from the Recognition Records bandcamp, as digital download and super-limited cassette with custom artwork, and it’s the first in a series of forthcoming re-editions of Jacek’s early works.

The “Tumult Hands” duet is made by Jacek Sienkiewicz and Jerzy Przeździecki - the producers whose composition has - to a large extent- defined the Polish techno music. 

“Tumult Hands” has two EPs on its account – “Tumult Hands EP” (2014) and “Tropic Factory” (2016). Both were published by Recognition. 

The album titled: “TH” (Recognition, 2022) has been prepared for many years. The repertoire was created mainly out of improvisation. As artists themselves say, “it is the result of discovering and accepting a chance event.” For both producers, close contact with instruments was important during their composition; the type of interaction between the maker and an electronic device. Individual works have been maturing for a long time. Paradoxically - the lapse of time did not cause them to be ageing but vice versa - allowed them to mature and gain natural weight.

From the very start, Recognition Digital aims to be a platform for releasing adventurous electronic sounds bordering on club music, also coming from the artists from outside the strictly electronic scene.
Here, we present a brand new release from Tsar Poloz - an extraordinary artist hailing from the bleak, industrial city of Lodz. 
Piotr Poloz is no newcomer - in fact, he's been pretty active on the Polish indie scene, releasing first album in 2001. Apart from a multitude of electronic projects he's involved in, Poloz also sings and plays bass in an indie-rock band Psychocukier.
"I Wanna Drink", his EP for Recognition, is clearly driven by his fascination with some more gritty types of club music, but with a clear pop sensibility - note simple, but catchy melodies and funky bass samples (all played by Poloz on his vintage Polish bass guitar). Somewhere between rough techno and quirky synthpop, Chicago house and cheeky electroclash, three original tunes here are equally amusing and entertaining. These are accompanied by three remixes from well established artists, each providing us with his unique vision of retro-futuristic techno: label boss Jacek Sienkiewicz under his Recognition moniker, up- and coming analogue wizard Chino and a duo of Warsaw veteran DJs - Mic Ostap and Motyl.

Recognition Recordings proudly presents the new project on the label - Tumult Hands! This fairly ambiguous name hides the identities of two experienced producers, totally devoted to their machines - Jacek Sienkiewicz and Jurek Przeździecki. Despite being radically different personalities, and despite huge differences in their way of working, Jacek and Jurek joined forces to create one of a kind sonic laboratory. Recognition 034 brings two tracks, created in equal parts by meticulous work and spontaneous studio improvisation. "TUMULT HANDS" is a 10- minute odyssey into the realm of low frequencies - merciless groove carries subsequent waves of bass, swelling, disappearing and reverberating with cosmic echoes, while other sounds culminate in industrial noises - just to release shiny, futuristic melodies. "GLOVE BOX" on the other hand, is an effective club tool for uncompromising DJs - bringing an answer to many questions about the future of minimal techno.
TUMULT HANDS EP is the duo's debut release, but Jacek and Jurek already have more tunes ready to release later this year. We can also expect more live shows from the pair.

"Recognition CD" is the first album ever released on Recognition Records - 25years ago. I clearly remember folding the inserts and packing them into jewel boxes. I sent several pieces abroad to my favourite music magazines - the feedback was surprisingly very good. It gave me fuel for further releases and towards fulfilling my dreams of being a creator, producer and publisher of vinyl records. This was the beginning of my label.
There are as many as 15 different tracks on the album. From experiments through Detroit techno and electro to deeper sounds. Today, some of the tunes can be listened to with a gentle smile, while others still work quite well. 
It is only available on Recognition Bandcamp.

This year Recognition Records celebrates its 25th anniversary. Jacek Sienkiewicz's label has already produced several dozen titles, consolidating its position as not only one of the most important, but also the most creative Polish labels. 

Jacek himself consistently follows his own artistic path, moving freely between multi-layered, dynamic (post)techno music and avant-garde experiments with sound. 

On the 25th anniversary of the release of the first album, Recognition presents material from 2000-2001 that has never been released in digital form, only on vinyl. The title "Directions: Meaning & Truth" is a compilation of titles 2, 3 and 4 of Jacek's 12”s, i.e. releases that found a wide response abroad and led to him being recognized as one of the most interesting producers on the European scene. 

"Directions" is, above all, the epic, uplifting "New Direction", but the other two tracks are also perfect examples of strong, uncompromising minimal techno. 

"Meaning" creatively transforms the inspirations of the Detroit sound with an irresistibly party character, but at the same time refers to the digital sounds of glitch aesthetics in an original way. 

"The Truth" creatively develops the ideas from the previous record, but goes into darker regions with visible dub influences. 

All three releases collected here undoubtedly have their place in the history of techno music of the 2000s - and to this day they unquestionably defend themselves not only as club tools, but also as testimony to Jacek's extraordinary, individual style, in some way being ahead of its time. 
We hope that they will get a new life with the digital release. 

The compilation includes an additional, previously unreleased track from the same period.

"Ridges" is a result of a creative encounter between veteran of improvised avant-electronics Max Loderbauer (among others, co-creator of Sun Electric, member of Moritz von Oswald Trio, and frequent collaborator of Ricardo Villalobos) and spiritus movens of Warsaw-based label Recognition Jacek Sienkiewicz. Meeting takes place not only on the level of investigating pure sound and building complex structures, but also on the level of fascination with mountainside aura and mystique that is common to both artists: Alps (Loderbauer) and Tatra (Sienkiewicz), as well as with the vocal cultures of communities inhabiting theese areas. Deeply introspective and individualistic confrontation between two peer sensibilities and imaginative worlds gave birth to two separate compositions in the vein of contemplative electronic music at it purest.

Michał Wolski is a Polish musician, music journalist, radio DJ and tireless promoter of dub techno aesthetics. Eight extended compositions on his new record “La Mer” (Sea) recall those special moments when sound becomes a movement of a kinetic sculpture, an abstract painting, or a cinematic report from the Arctic solitude. Personal and introvert, yet simultaneously carrying certain universal message (cosmic loneliness? molecular life?), sound space created by Wolski manages to seduce listener and inhale her/him for whole 75 minutes. Associations with sculptural work with matter are not purely arbitrary. On his fourth full-length, artist consciously shapes complex and saturated form, further developing - on evidence on his earlier releases - penchant for exploring darker alleys of synthesis and sound design. In his varied and consistent narration, one can find a whole range of references to noblest protoplasts such as Pan Sonic, Rhythm & Sound, or even Vatican Shadow’s desert manipulation. However, the key to album’s consistency does not rely on the power of quote, it rather manifests itself in sheer scale and depth of imagined atmospheres and non-existent geographies. But Wolski’s constructs are much more than a set of sea sound fantasies. “La Mer” is a highly individualist vision of new worlds of listening AND hearing, truly deep acoustic ecology in time of overall hiss.

MCHY I PORØSTY "Hypnagogic polish music for teenage mutants" (Recognition SP-01)

"Hypnagogic polish music for teenage mutants" is a debut album of Mchy i Porosty ('mosses and lichens') – a solo project of musician Bartosz Zaskórski. It's released as an art book - every track is accompanied by a drawing made by one of the artists invited to the project.

This album tells stories about getting asleep on the bus, control panels which finally supplanted picture tubes, Polish village which gets haunted by ghosts of drowned cats, teenage urban muitants wearing fashionable gear, and about wall units that one can find in illegal waste dumps in the middle of the forest. Humor is interlaced with terror, terror gets mixed with motor hum on the bus.

"End" marks the meeting of two incurable individualists, who use various tools of their trade to come up with a surprisingly atemporal effect, an insistent pulse of detail on an ever-morphing background. Core of tracks included on the record has been produced on the occasion of Max and Jacek appearing as a live duo during 2015's Berlin Atonal festival, which resulted in well received “Alpine-Tatra-Himalaian" EP "Ridges". Remaining compositions are natural conclusion of their friendship, conversations, meetings, trips and recording sessions that operate according to the rule of free improvisation with a reduced instrumental setup.

"The title is a reference to the number of beats per minute in classic techno music. Jacek Sienkiewicz, a pioneer of techno in Poland, whose works are presented in the exhibition, played in this tempo in the 90s. The term “rave” is used to refer to underground dance events with electronic music—mainly techno which took hold in Poland along with the transformation in the political and economic system in the early 1990s. On one hand they were an expression of the authentic if often naive optimism of the period of transformation. On the other hand they manifested the anxieties of those times of civilizational and technological acceleration."

Throughout the upcoming year 2018, Recognition will be honoured to present series of regular installments of Jackname Trouble saga. This Olsztyn-based producer, active for more than a decade now, still remains rather underrated, although his artistic output is surrounded by somewhat cult-like following among the connoisseurs of multi-genre electronic music. Actually, after his recent travels abroad, Jackname Trouble has literally flooded Recognition HQ with tons of his material, both old and brand new. Hence, the idea of releasing weekly portion of Jackname Trouble goodness came out as a quite natural option which is additionally connected to his dense and highly paradoxical “Benefits of Laughter EP” which was released by Recognition in 2010. Eight years later, this quite talented gentleman returns in the label schedule with a chain of varied and modern skits, tracks and vignettes reflecting his wide musical interests and unquestionable skills in programming the machines.

“It’s Maths classes. A red-haired boy sits in the back, rhythmically tapping his fingers on a table like a madman. Although other students’ eyesight is focused on the formula being written on the blackboard, the boy could not care less. Out of a corner of his eye he notices as the sequence of numbers slowly begins to melt off the blackboard, glittering with colours, and finally spills all over the floor like a fractal leakage from some other dimension. Students from the first rows, scared, put their legs up - and then you start to hear the rhythm. The sounds, once set free, feedback from the walls and find their way to all chinks and cracks, circle all around to finally reach the teacher’s ear. The lady cannot stop the upcoming fury, grabs Krzysztof Ostrowski (number 28) by his ear and circumventing the leakage she leads him out of the classroom. It’s not the first nor the second time such thing happens. Years later, the boy finally sits by the machine; subtle light comes through the window slightly ajar, the curtain dances with the wind. Krzysztof, bent, is programming the rhythm.”

It’s warm and bright Autumn of 2018 and Krzysztof emerges again, this time on vinyl released by Jacek Sienkiewicz’s label Recognition. The experimental style of “Primary Fluctuation” might come as a surprise to many of Jacek’s followers, but there are surely some common features for the two artists - from attention to detail to a kind of serious melancholy present in their music. Ostrowski’s record is a journey through futuristic polyrhythm, with enough space for menacing basses or unorthodox samples, reminding the aesthetics of fusion of broken techno and bass music championed recently by the labels like Timedance or Livity Sound. Four tracks (five in digital version) make up a cohesive, intriguing and surprising record, announcing series of special releases prepared by Recognition for the forthcoming months.

Krzysztof Ostrowski lives in Bygdoszcz; for years he’s been creating all forms of electronic music, from elusive sonic research to forthright techno with an experimental twist. Additionally, his work as a trumpeter in a military marching band surely broadens his musical scope. He records solo as Freeze, or in duets with Piotr Cisak or Mateusz Wysocki/Fischerle (as IFS).

Already 32nd release on Recognition Records is a very special one - as two great individuals join forces for a pretty special cause.

Produced together with the Goethe Institut in Warsaw, the records aims to celebrate 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner - the extraordinary composer, whose attitude towards any contemporary music medium was as much shocking, as inspiring.

The label boss Jacek Sienkiewicz invited his companion Uwe Schmidt (known also as Atom TM, Atom Heart, Senor Coconut and a myriad of other disguises) to take a look at Wagner's work - and here we are, with two totally different, but equally challenging variations on a theme.

Atom TM's tune is a majestic, classically-composed ambient piece, inspired by a certain chord derived from an epilogue of Wagner's opera, "Tristan & Isolde". This track goes a way from quiet to almost bombastic, and for any means dramatic, which makes perfectly sense here. A serious, somewhat sordid, electronic tale of loss and separation, driven to o point of stubbornness rather than resignation, it fits the theme perfectly, at the same time being a very special addition to Atom's vast catalogue.

On the flipside, Jacek Sienkiewicz goes all deep techno in his epic "The Phantom Of Bayreuth". So much different than Warsaw producers' recent, complex work, it goes straight for some haunting string arrangement, soon underpinned by a muffled, minimal groove. Both main layers shift and intertwine, illustrating, as Jacek puts it, "the struggle, the drama, the passion one can find in Wagner's music". Neo-classical approach to a modern club rhythms? Stripped-down Romantic machine music?
