Milan based duo Simone Baratta and Nicolò Chenet are the force behind mysterious DJ outfit Orion. Alongside their principal cognomen, active since 2018, they’ve also banded together with Giegling’s Ateq as Pale Product for further excursions into their sonic universe. As a pair they’ve been largely flying under the radar, but perhaps not for long, their all too danceable sound is a deep, persistent fusion of influences destined for the club (take their residency at Milanese haunt Vitamina for instance). You could add their eponymous label to that too, where a growing number of ‘slow-release’ records attest to their predilection for quality over quantity. Bassiani Podcast 185 is their live set recorded at Horoom mid-September: think intimate and smoke-filled afterhours gatherings and pure camaraderie among a close-knit group of ravers. A high spirited trip across the dancefloor from saturated and dubby ambient to Detroit inclinations, courtesy of this budding techno pairing.

Joining us this month is one of the most consistent producers around at the moment. In the past six years Alex has been releasing exciting material through local Stockholm labels such as Abdulla Rashim's Northern Electronics, Bossmuik, and Aniara Records which put out his first record back in 2010. Aniara Records is also responsible for putting out the majority of his output as one half of Genius Of Time, the irresistible DJ/Live act he formed with his good friend Nils Krogh but the duo's punchy releases also found a home on Clone's Royal Oak and Gerd Janson's Running Back. The past two years have seen him focusing primarily on his solo output as Dorisburg and his most ambitious project to date arrived earlier this year on John Talobot's Hivern Discs in the form of the Irrbloss LP.

Today he's prepared a very special mix of mysterious and rare hypnotic House cuts which he recorded straight to cassette through a studio console and analogue outboard. He told us the mix is for "late night internet exploring...something to get lost within while browsing the unknown corners of the web... or possibly what a rave could sound like on an abandoned space station". Already 32nd release on Recognition Records is a very special one - as two great individuals join forces for a pretty special cause.

Produced together with the Goethe Institut in Warsaw, the records aims to celebrate 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner - the extraordinary composer, whose attitude towards any contemporary music medium was as much shocking, as inspiring.

The label boss Jacek Sienkiewicz invited his companion Uwe Schmidt (known also as Atom TM, Atom Heart, Senor Coconut and a myriad of other disguises) to take a look at Wagner's work - and here we are, with two totally different, but equally challenging variations on a theme.

Atom TM's tune is a majestic, classically-composed ambient piece, inspired by a certain chord derived from an epilogue of Wagner's opera, "Tristan & Isolde". This track goes a way from quiet to almost bombastic, and for any means dramatic, which makes perfectly sense here. A serious, somewhat sordid, electronic tale of loss and separation, driven to o point of stubbornness rather than resignation, it fits the theme perfectly, at the same time being a very special addition to Atom's vast catalogue.

On the flipside, Jacek Sienkiewicz goes all deep techno in his epic "The Phantom Of Bayreuth". So much different than Warsaw producers' recent, complex work, it goes straight for some haunting string arrangement, soon underpinned by a muffled, minimal groove. Both main layers shift and intertwine, illustrating, as Jacek puts it, "the struggle, the drama, the passion one can find in Wagner's music". Neo-classical approach to a modern club rhythms? Stripped-down Romantic machine music?
