Operation Laïka was the first spatial mission to send a living passenger into space, for which a dog was chosen. 

Unfortunately, the four cosmonauts that were supposed to take care of the animal tragically lost it a few hour before the take-off. The space agency then decided to send them into a space exile to punish them and to complete their researches on the effect of space travel on the human metabolism.
