Muletonic - Fire the Fox

Unfaithful is the fourth album by No Sky God. Initially released in 2021, the record serves as a sequel of sorts to the band’s previous album, Infidel. Continuing that records’ more roots and folk rock focus, Unfaithful features expanded use of banjos, omnichords, and synths to create a kind of new wave folk. Album opener “Melodramatic Eyes” and final track “Mardi” both exemplify this stylistic turn, with “Melodramatic Eyes” featuring Delicate Steve’s Steve Marion on both drums and banjo-guitar. “Washington Square” brings a slightly harder edge and employs the Turkish saz extensively to create a droning intensity. “The Drum” is a faithful tribute to krautrock act Slapp Happy, also featuring Marion on lead guitar. “Gravel” continues the influence of 70s German art rock while also making a lyrical allusion to Galaxie 500’s breakout record On Fire. “Unfaithful” and “Suitcase” both feature the playing and songwriting of band member Tanner Beam, and bring a folk-country vibe that stands in contrast to some of the album’s other cuts. “Vineyard” is a plaintive rocker that looks back to the alternative rock of the 1990s, while “Long Way Home” features the songwriting and vocal talents of James Marceda, the band’s cofounder.
