My old friend Aras asked me one day if I could perform at the charity event he organizes for the refugees in the Kurdistan Region for the people who are on the run from IS fighters in Iraq ans Syria. He explained the circumstances to me and pointed out the immense struggle these families have to go through day by day. He told me that he and his team are about to fly the money directly to the people in need by themselves. The proceeds will be distributed among refugees, in the Dohug and Erbil Governorate which is very close to the Iraqi/Syrian Border. Due to it’s location a huge part of the Syrian as well as the Yezidi and christian refugees ended up in this region. The money will be delivered directly to the refugees, to help them attend to their most immediate needs, such as food, clean water and warm clothing for the winter. It was clear for me that I had to support his endeavors. 

As I realized that performing there wouldn't be possible because of me being on tour with the Betty Ford Boys, I wanted to find another way to support this project with something bigger than just a performance. I started calling the homies and everybody was immediately down to support "FOR THE PEOPLE" with an unreleased instrumental. There you have it; this is how the idea for the compilation was born. I would like to thank each and everyone who bought this record and supported this movement. Also I would like to shout out all my brothers who sent me these dope ass beats. And last but definitely not least, Jannis and Jakarta Records for seeing my little vision and making this an official release via Jakarta to help raise even more money.

XOA, led by London based producer and musician Nick Tyson, is set to release debut album ‘Way West’ on 14th June via Five Easy Pieces.

XOA means to look outwards; to draw inspiration from many sources. ‘Way West’ is alive with this: steeped in the rich analogue sonics of the past, the warmth of machines and influence from the sounds of London’s fervent music scene. Featuring a blend of contemporary electronic production and live instrumentation, 70s Afrobeat inspired drums and cosmic melodies are thrust into the present day with strong cues from house and techno.

Three vocalists contribute across the album, with Tyson choosing to work with singers he has a personal admiration and friendship with. Hollie Cook, known to many for her ethereal pop tinged reggae, delivers a sumptuous contribution on ‘Heartland’, adding a beautiful emotional dimension to the horn led track. Lulu Jones’ vocals are treated more as a sample for the garage tinged ‘Call On Me’ and Ruby Wood, of Submotion Orchestra, has worked with Tyson over a number of projects and their shared love of 90s soul comes to the fore on the laid back grooves and sun kissed ‘Only One Thing’.

“When collaborating, especially with vocalists on melodic and lyrical ideas, it’s important to have that personal connection and respect for each other’s craft. That’s why I never ask vocalists to prepare anything in advance for the tracks, I like to get in the room and just see what happens in the moment, to trust each other’s ideas, and for it to be a natural, organic and spontaneous process”.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of the project for Tyson. He plays the bulk of the instruments on the album but invites Marijus Aleksa on drums to provide live energy, extra synth work from Parisian Kenzo Zurzolo, and a notable Rhodes solo from Johnny Tomlinson (a member of Bonobo’s live band) on ‘Osu’.

After well received releases on Soundway Records, Cin Cin (with Wayward) and Banana Hill (with Contours); ‘Way West’ shows another step up for Tyson as a writer and producer.

“It feels like this project is coming alive for me, the music I envisaged in my mind a few years ago is being realised, and I’m proud of how it sounds”.

‘Way West’ is set to be released on 14th June 2019 via London based label Five Easy Pieces (Mo Kolours, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Natureboy Flako, Royalty, Call Super) on vinyl LP and digital formats.

In late April, early May as COVID was ravaging NYC  (before our city blew up with the most inspiriting demonstration of the people power I've ever seen) - I was in a weird place, locked in my house for months with a lot of fear to go outside or see friends as a lifelong Asthmatic I ended up spontaneously putting this house mix together. It was all tracks that spoke to me that were  mellow, deep, sometimes melancholic with but with undertones of hope for the future and a realization that all things are temporary, and change is the only thing that's constant. Music speaks to people in weird ways, and these songs spoke to me in that way. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. Volume 2 on the way soon.
