XOA, led by London based producer and musician Nick Tyson, is set to release debut album ‘Way West’ on 14th June via Five Easy Pieces.

XOA means to look outwards; to draw inspiration from many sources. ‘Way West’ is alive with this: steeped in the rich analogue sonics of the past, the warmth of machines and influence from the sounds of London’s fervent music scene. Featuring a blend of contemporary electronic production and live instrumentation, 70s Afrobeat inspired drums and cosmic melodies are thrust into the present day with strong cues from house and techno.

Three vocalists contribute across the album, with Tyson choosing to work with singers he has a personal admiration and friendship with. Hollie Cook, known to many for her ethereal pop tinged reggae, delivers a sumptuous contribution on ‘Heartland’, adding a beautiful emotional dimension to the horn led track. Lulu Jones’ vocals are treated more as a sample for the garage tinged ‘Call On Me’ and Ruby Wood, of Submotion Orchestra, has worked with Tyson over a number of projects and their shared love of 90s soul comes to the fore on the laid back grooves and sun kissed ‘Only One Thing’.

“When collaborating, especially with vocalists on melodic and lyrical ideas, it’s important to have that personal connection and respect for each other’s craft. That’s why I never ask vocalists to prepare anything in advance for the tracks, I like to get in the room and just see what happens in the moment, to trust each other’s ideas, and for it to be a natural, organic and spontaneous process”.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of the project for Tyson. He plays the bulk of the instruments on the album but invites Marijus Aleksa on drums to provide live energy, extra synth work from Parisian Kenzo Zurzolo, and a notable Rhodes solo from Johnny Tomlinson (a member of Bonobo’s live band) on ‘Osu’.

After well received releases on Soundway Records, Cin Cin (with Wayward) and Banana Hill (with Contours); ‘Way West’ shows another step up for Tyson as a writer and producer.

“It feels like this project is coming alive for me, the music I envisaged in my mind a few years ago is being realised, and I’m proud of how it sounds”.

‘Way West’ is set to be released on 14th June 2019 via London based label Five Easy Pieces (Mo Kolours, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Natureboy Flako, Royalty, Call Super) on vinyl LP and digital formats.

Dday One “Feel My Drums” - Finest Ego | Monthly Mix #011

MIMS is excited to premiere “Colorists”, one of our favourite songs from the fourth installment of  the Felbm project, on Soundway Records. A beautiful bossa nova blended with ambient music and soothing guitars. The whole tape is one to dream away too but “Colorists” makes us want to dance too, or at least tap our feet uncontrollably.

Following on from 2018’s Tape 1 & Tape 2, the Dutch producer and musician Eelco Topper recording as Felbm, has already released Tape 3 as a digital EP, to be released together with Tape 4 on one vinyl LP on October 16.

Tape 3 & Tape 4 is an intimate, emotional, lilting and melodic solo project with a restorative, therapeutic nature. They were composed and recorded by Topper with just those aspects in mind as a personal remedy for the ailments of modern life. With a breezy and soothing quality these fourteen lo-fi, instrumental, jazz-infused sketches written on guitar, with cascading keyboards, vibraphone and drum machine, seem perfect for the second half of 2020, a year in which we could all surely use some curative and uncomplicated music. With echoes of the dreamier end of 1980s English indie-pop, minimal ambient music and Brazilian bossa-nova, Topper’s musical storybook includes touches of The Durutti Column, echoes of Ethiopian Tezeta, hints of Antônio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell, whilst all set firmly in the summer fields of Germany and the Netherlands.

“In the summer of 2019 I took only a guitar and a “pocket piano” to a holiday retreat in rural mid-Germany that I visit regularly, and wrote most of the basic ideas for Tape 4. The opening track ‘Brunnengasse’ features the wind chimes from the garden there. When I hear them I’m back at that peaceful place immediately. Dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome for the past few years, I took on a habit of hiking in nature frequently, which in turn led to a budding love of birdwatching. The track ‘Beaufort’ contains a field recording taken in an area where I like to go hiking and spotting birds. Most notably you can hear the song of a woodlark, a bird far easier heard than seen.”

Style-wise these tracks are still navigating the space between quiet, open, meditative tunes and more solid instrumental songs, thereby reflecting his constant search for an optimal balance between stillness and movement.

Exclusive Premiere: Felbm "Colorists" (Forthcoming on Soundway Records)

In 2018 Far Out Recordings signed a record deal with Brooklyn born, nomadic producer Jneiro Jarel. Having just put the finishing touches to the recordings, Jarel suffered an ischemic stroke while living and working in Costa Rica and his wife Indigo was forced to set up a crowd fund to cover special medical transport back to the states to receive treatment.

The release was put on hold, but thanks to the generosity of friends and fans around the world, Jarel was able to get the care he needed and is now on the long road to recovery.

We’re overjoyed to finally announce that Jneiro Jarel’s After A Thousand Years is now set for an October 2020 release. Throughout a career that has spanned over twenty years and seen collaborations with MF DOOM, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, BadBadNotGood, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Kimbra and Khujo Goodie (Dungeon Family), Jneiro Jarel’s consistently distinctive, forward thinking productions, as well as his love for the music of Brazil, made his partnership with Far Out a perfect fit.

Recorded between New York, New Orleans, Miami and Costa Rica, After A Thousand Years features legendary multi-instrumentalist Bill Summers, famed for his work with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Eddie Henderson. The album also features Malawian-American guitarist Masauko Chipembere who has worked with the likes of RZA from Wu- Tang Clan and Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets. For Jarel, After A Thousand Years is “a culmination of the longstanding musical contributions of the African diaspora.” Permeating the Brazilian music and Latin jazz Jarel has loved and drawn inspiration from, as well as the stateside jazz, soul and funk Jarel grew up around, the influence of Africa and its musical history, on both North and South America, is key to the album’s sound. On lead single “Banana Peel”, Jarel’s outernational perspective makes for a track that is almost impossible to place geographically: you can hear the swing of Jarel’s native New Orleans jazz, the vibrance of Costa Rican rainforests as well as the influence of Jarel’s vast collection of Brazilian records. “Viberian Waves” is equally nonconformist, morphing from funky baroque-flavoured instrumental hip hop into a bossa inspired, percussive jam.

Taking its inspiration from the biblical prophecies found in the books of Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation, foretelling the fully realized, physical and spiritual restoration of the earth and
mankind after the thousand year reign of the Messianic Kingdom, After A Thousand Years contemplates and celebrates a world where everlasting love, peace, and harmony abound under a sovereign, divine rulership. 

After A Thousand Years will be released on Vinyl LP, CD and digitally on the 30th October 2020 via Far Out Recordings.
