Holidays on secluded beaches; long hikes up a mountain to catch the sunset; an unforgettable meal at a restaurant on the square: her preferred means of escaping reality had become impossible over the last year. Now she relied on her imagination to whisk her away. She closed her eyes and pictured herself somewhere free from the pressures of daily life; the waves gently lapping at her feet, the wind rustling her hair and the sun streaming down on her face.

For his debut release on Loose Fit Records, Leipzig-based producer Planetary Secrets explores themes of escapism, translating his personal take on what escaping reality means to him. Conjuring up fantastical feelings of nostalgia and imagined worlds throughout, the opener, 90s rave-inspired 'Guatemala Dreams', transports listeners into dense jungle, while B-side, 'Burning Fist', is a love letter to vintage video games, specifically Tekken. These two original cuts are backed up by remixes from Lobster Theremin affiliate Pépe and Breaka Recordings boss, Breaka.

Artesian Sounds is back after a two-year rest, announcing Scissorwork's new EP 'Identity Crisis'. Giving a nod to his efforts at knitting together different sounds and genres into a coherent whole, 'Identity Crisis' comprises three stylistically distinct tracks shot through with the Bristol producer's signature stylings. Moving forward from his earlier forays into lo-fi, Scissorwork presents a collage of influences spanning house, leftfield bass and electro.

The opener 'A Hundred Years' is a summery earworm featuring cascading synth lines and a catchy vocal hook meandering over a guitar loop, comped with delicate touches on the Rhodes in quieter moments. On the flipside is 'Flourishes', a rhythmic workout swung forward by syncopated stabs and a shuffling beat that seems to warp in and out of different time signatures. 'Identity Crisis' culminates in the title track, a rolling electro number topped off with a slidey G-funk solo.

Minor Detail is a DJ / producer duo from Northern Ireland, consisting of C58 and DJ Debauchery, who self-released their first dubby, breaks-infused track called “Proximity Dub” in March 2022. To have a stage for their own releases as well as the ones of their favourite artists and friends, the two decided to start their own label, HEIFER. On the debut release of the new imprint, Minor Detail have brought together four artists who provided diverse, very dancefloor-ready tracks between breakbeat and techno.

First off, we have “#2” by techno, electro and breaks producer Cosmic Chaos from Liverpool, UK. Dark choir style pads, arpeggiated synths and basslines are combined with breaky drums and percussion in this one to create a very driving electro track.

With "Bout Us", Parisian producer Lungo presents us a new track under his alias Usotsuki. This superb roller combines a UK Garage aesthetic with UK-style Breakbeats in a stripped-down way, all centered around raw, unpolished drums, snappy claps and percussion and a thumping bass line, with some synths piercing through here and there.

“BZTTRX22” by Irish duo Street Legal from South Derry is the most techno-oriented track on the first HEIFER release. It combines ravey, 90s-inspired synth sounds with massive drums, a bass synth playing octaves and a rolling sampled drum break, resulting in a track fitting best to a party in an abandoned warehouse.

Finally, the Various Artists EP includes a track by Liverpool-based DJ Debauchery. The title “Donk-y Kong” already tells us that we can expect a UK Hard House styled track. It indeed includes the characteristic donkey offbeat bassline as well as short synth stabs, driving drums and some vocal cuts which sound like samples from a video game – presumably from the one the title refers to. Definitely a fun track for fans of the genre!

Written between 2020-2021, “Cerulean” is a ten-track album which delves into the isolation of the emotion of blue. The tracks flow between UK genres, combining sliced breaks, emotive melodic synths and deep pulsating low end to audibly display Jeigo’s intricate and melancholic production qualities. The album was produced in his former family home in South West London during the pandemic and finished in his home for the last two years in Peckham. Each track sits on the border of home listening and club functionality, with essences of crying on the dance floor euphoria, to those blissful or challenging moments alone.

Between 1 April 2022 and 30 September 2022, food banks in the Trussell Trust’s UK-wide network distributed 1.3 million food parcels to people facing hardship – this is an increase of 52% compared to the same period in 2019. Half a million of these parcels were distributed to children. The charity says that for the first time, need for emergency food is outstripping donations as the cost of living emergency is leading to a drastic increase in the number of people turning to food banks for support. 

With this situation being more urgent than ever, Vief are delighted to announce their 2nd charity compilation will be raising funds for the Trussell Trust. Not only providing incredibly vital, immediate support to people facing hardship, the charity also works tirelessly towards the goal of ending the need for food bank in the UK. 

Spanning genres and tempos, reticulation stands as the label’s most ambitious project to date, and owes its thanks to the immense talent and generosity of the 20 producers involved.

Fresh from his split release with Laurel Halo, Livity Sound affiliate Hodge teams up with Peach Discs boss Shanti Celeste, one of Bristol’s most successful DJ exports of recent years. The Soba Dance 12” contains three tracks of trippy, drum-heavy energy, but on the heatstroke-inducing B-side ‘Alula’ they’ve produced a winning combo of crusty breaks, tropical percussion and a ridiculously infectious bassline. Soba Dance is out via Peach Discs on 6th February.
