This month, Vladimir Ivkovic pays tribute to French DJ and music obsessive Alexis Le-Tan, whose disco edits are the stuff of legend. He has reshaped vintage gems via the Les Edits du Golem imprint since 2007; around the same time, Permanent Vacation tapped him (along with co-conspirator Jess) to put together the much-loved Space Oddities compilations, which collected rare European library grooves from the late ’70s and early ’80s. More recently, Le-Tan teamed up with Joakim and III-Studio as Full Circle, another edit-based undertaking devoted to celebrating choice selections from the original Goa sound. In its too-brief run (2012-2018), London’s Total Refreshment Centre made an indelible impact on the music community of the city. Housed in a converted factory in Hackney that once operated as a Caribbean social club, the venue and recording studio was intrinsically tied to the city’s cultural past; as such, it was the ideal home to nurture the city’s burgeoning jazz renaissance and to provide a space where the likes of Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia could connect with the past while creating their sounds of the future. This spring, music journalist and RBMA lecture host Emma Warren released (via her own publishing platform, Sweet Machine) her book centered on the history of this storied venue, Make Some Space: Tuning Into Total Refreshment Centre. On today’s episode, we’ll hear a conversation between Warren and Peak Time correspondent Lauren Martin about Warren’s early encounters with TRC, the cultural significance of the opening and closing of such spaces and some of her favorite memories. And, in honor of Soundsystem week on RBMA Daily, Vivian speaks with Damien Ashton of Brooklyn soundsystem and record label, Dub-Stuy.

Peak Time with Emma Warren On Total Refreshment Centre

The UK has a long history of talented bass manipulators, and Joe Cowton has proven himself worthy of being included amongst their ranks. Both solo as Kowton, and with Bristol luminaries Peverelist and Asusu as Livity Sound, he’s had a string of releases showcasing a talent for inventive rhythms. In many ways, the music he creates is techno, albeit a raw, stripped-down variant of the genre: influenced by the low-end-heavy mutations of the UK hardcore continuum. He’s contributed floor-smashing tunes to imprints like Idle Hands, All Caps, Naked Lunch, Hessle Audio and Keysound, but his collaborations with Peverelist have proved particularly potent, setting the stage for his own move toward a more focused sound palette. Now based in London, he’s prepared to make a full-length statement with his debut solo album, Utility, this April.

As the latest signing to incendiary British electronic label Planet Mu, Turkish producer @samibaha is set to make the most of the spotlight. Pushing his unique ideas about the sonic crossroads between US trap instrumentation, British club sounds and Arabic melodies and rhythms, his productions are a heady blend of future possibilities. Sami Baha’s ideas about where music comes from, and what it can speak to in the present, makes his work a timely punch to the gut for those who have grown cynical about the future of radical musical experimentation. Having recently moved to London from Istanbul to pursue this work, and with his Mavericks EP out now, his Choice Mix comes at a turning point in his story.

Choice Mix: Sami Baha

Born in Tokyo, Japan, @akirakosemura began playing the piano at 3-years old. 28 years later, he’s a self-taught composer and arranger who has released nearly a dozen solo and collaborative albums of contemplative, minimalist piano work. Drawing inspiration from film scores, he writes and records albums in the style of a soundtrack composer: ambient and acoustic sentiments of classical composition, what he describes as a way to “imagine, but not imagine, to find something beautiful in my mind.” Since 2007, he’s also been running his own label, Schole, to release his own music and the music of like-minded composers who he’s found online. Born of a relationship with the Australian artist Lawrence English, who started his Someone Good label to release Akira’s first album, It’s On Everything, the Schole label is deeply connected to Akira’s compositional mind-set. “The living world is always connected to composing music,” Akira says. “All living things are saving in my mind deeply. Composing music is not special thing for me - it’s something obvious, like breathing, crying and smiling.” For his Choice Mix, Akira Kosemura has woven together one hour of gentle piano compositions by himself and others.

Growing up in a small Russian village, @ingamauer felt isolated from her peers musically: writing and recording at home, with few people to reach out to around her; using the internet as a way to communicate with friends in Europe and North America about music, even though they “felt like they were on a different planet.” On the day that a friend of Inga’s opened the now well-known St. Petersburg techno club Stackenschneider, a small space that gives a home to strange underground electronic sounds, and agreed to be a resident DJ there, Inga met another kindred Russian spirit who would become her booking agent-and-champion. Between “Stacken” and this new friendship, Inga played every weekend, in various locations around Russia, for one year: building a loyal fanbase under the radar of the wider dance music community. Some of those internet friendships – with Toulouse Low Trax of the Düsseldorf club Salon des Amateurs, and Guy Tavares of The Hague’s Bunker Records – invited her to play at their parties, and Inga has barely been able to call Russia home since, travelling and DJ-ing with fervor. As a producer, too, she’s started to release her own work on the Hivern Discs label (her debut EP, From Cologne To Clone, and a second EP, due in December 2016) and Matias Aguyao’s Cómeme label, too. For her Choice Mix, Inga Mauer delves into the morbid sensuality of fuzzy post-punk, synth-led pop, and thundering techno and electro to unearth dark gems.
