Premiere : Ruven Medici - Back To The Roots  [NBN008]

The twenty second instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them. Born from a chance encounter in the vast digital expanse of social media, Spacetown has followed in Alfred's footsteps, moving to Leeds to immerse himself in the rich music scene while pursuing a PhD. His time up north has clearly influenced him greatly, evident in this expertly crafted mix. Spacetown invites us on a cosmic journey through groovy deep house and ethereal wafters, drawing from the wealth of talent amongst his friends and many nights out at the Imaginarium. Each track serves as a reference point in his sonic odyssey, showcasing his dedication to his craft and offering listeners a glimpse into the essence of the ever-evolving sound of Leeds' musical heartbeat.

Reference Mark Mix 022 ※ Spacetown

This EP contains 4 tracks inspired by the dance music boom in Europe from the late 80s to early 90s. Luis composed all the tracks using a Novation BassStation, an Akai MPC 2000XL for the drums and sampling, and a Korg M1 for the pads and melodies, using the occasional VST where appropriate.

A1 “Miedo aqui estoy” (Fear, here I am) combines a fast bassline with a hypnotic melody, New Wave influences and shades of electro unite to create an immersive atmosphere. The message ‘no to fear’ being transmitted through optimistic and euphoric pads. 

A2 “Neminem Laedere”, inspired by New Wave sounds and rhythm, this track uses bright synths to create audio textures that invite introspection. The hypnotic melodies repeat throughout, enforcing the title's message ‘do no harm’.

B1 “Noches y Amaneceres” Taking the heavy and dark rhythms of new beat and entwining the contagious melodies of Italo provided by bright synths, this fusion gives the track a unique bouncy atmosphere.

B2 “Violines en el barrio”, A track that revolves around a focus on sampling. The breakbeat influence accompanying synths with an 80s flavour and pads providing a deeper texture.

In collaboration with Paris' recordshop Dizonord, Knekelhuis will close the summer of 2019 with this amazing gem. Beyond the Beat will burst dancefloors soon. 

Founded in 1990 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cold Front were what you'd call early adaptors, their music at the time of its inception an oddity. This fourpiece, consisting of spouses Ayanna and Cam Muata, Jon Jon Scott and Ron Clark, were far ahead of their time and faded just as rapidly as they entered the stage, only playing a handful of local shows in support of Nine Inch Nails, Meat Beat Manifesto and such, alongside several cameos during early house nights and techno events.

Though short lived, their music nevertheless speaks volumes. It's intriguing stuff, a magical association of sound reminiscent of Ron Hardy and Klein MBO. New Beat-like drum parts, overdubbed by politically engaged raps, basslines that would make The Cure proud, held together by freakout speaking in tongues vocal experiments while also showing an obvious parallel to the rise of triphop at the other side of the ocean.
