Brothertiger Reimagines Iconic Album of The Eighties - Tears For Fears’ Songs From The Big Chair - Out May 24(Reimagine Music)

In the mid 1980s new wave era, with feel good singles, such as “Love Shack” and “Footloose,” at the top of the charts, confessional songs of disheartening childhood experiences was the last thing one might expect from an aspiring young band. Yet it was the then newcomers Tears For Fears’ dark remembrances, supported by infectious melodies, that many rock critics now cite as having struck a chord with the young recession era generation causing their debut “The Hurting” to go to number one in the UK and the top ten in the US. 

With all the pressure a success of this kind can bring, including a mass of fans anxiously awaiting new material, their next recording sessions could have easily been a play it safe affair. Instead the band pushed themselves ever further artistically, with arrangements of a much greater level of complexity and musicianship. While the lyrics of much of what would become their second album, Songs From The Big Chair, would remain introspective, it may have been the more mature, and universal, coming of age themes that contributed to the album having an even wider appeal than The Hurting. 

In any case, with yet another string of hits from Big Chair -- including "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," "Shout," "Head over Heels," and "I Believe” -- Tears For Fears would find themselves not only standing head to head with the best acts of the day, it has since earned them the status of having one of highest grossing albums of the Eighties. Still today these songs remain permanent fixtures on classic radio, and Big Chair is now pantheon of seminal albums of the decade. 

Brothertiger Plays Songs From The Big Chair pays tribute Tears For Fears’ influential gem by giving it a modern take. Brothertiger is the alias of electronically-fueled John Jagos, a musician and producer based in Brooklyn, NY. Jagos’ passion for making music started out of his college dorm room at Ohio University in 2010. The Vision Tunnels EP was his first proper release, and soon after, he signed with Mush Records to release 3 subsequent albums.  

"Covering this album was gratifying, challenging, and truly inspiring” John Lagos says of the process. “I never thought I'd ever get a chance to be able to cover an entire album, let alone an album I truly care about. I feel so fortunate to be able to cover one of my favorite records in my own style and my own approach."

James Curd, Adam Frawley and Mitchell van Kaathoven aka Holy Models are a 3 piece Psychedelic Daytime Disco band hailing from outback South Australia. Their work transports the listener into a dream type state, yet rendering them fully conscious. Their genre bending style allows the user to explore a variety of different feelings. ‘Swimming’ is a textbook example. 

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of releasing Freeform Five’s comeback EP ‘Weltareh’ on Eskimo. Today we are more than glad to present you the first Freeform Five Reform in a looong time. Big!

Dutch newcomers Tesla55’s remix reminds us of that vintage Chromeo sound, which you all know we like a lot. Fellow Aussie Rocco Raimundo delivers a trippy version that is tailor made for a lazy afternoon at the poolside. 

Swimming is the opening track from The Pink Collection, the first installment in a brand new Eskimo compilation series that will be out early September.

You know how busy I am with my music brother Valerio in the Tiger & Woods project but I definitively didn't forget about my deeper side, the feelings side of music which I've been into for so many years. It finally came the moment to share with you some of those never released pieces of my heart, a little sketch which not only represents some personal stuff I'm going thru, but it's also part of a project called SACRAMENTO that soon or late will see the day of light. This unfinished song sketch tells a story about me, no words, just music. And like a balloon floats in the sky, I hope this link will float thru the net and reach your heart.

Richard Rossa's Tom Tom Disco label has built up a strong reputation by releasing some work by some pretty original nu-disco producers over the last four years. Always classy and never over-egging the pudding, the label limits itself to just the one compilation a year, and time has come for the 2016 edition. There are seven retro jams here to enjoy, including Guxi's redux of the proto house/Italo disco gem "Dance They Say", the taught arpeggiation of Fausto's "Nativo" and Rossa's own low-slung new wave funk joint, "Lone Riders"

Italy via Shanghai is the route taken for the debut E.P of Neapolitan producer Altieri, aka Eugenio Altieri. A designer living in Shanghai, Eugenio started to make music back in 2004, mixing music and visuals to create his “weirdo production” sessions. After traveling east he founded the DesToys duo, a live project that channelled space disco and 80s commercial music.

Edo is a personal view over the modern Asia, Japan in this case. Inspired by the street sounds and bugged out day to day world of Tokyo his debut EP is four tracks of slippery head music. Chiseled from the deep seams of an intergalactic mine and informed by the dark heart of house and no wave disco this is club music from the oily underbelly.

Some producers meet in the DJ booths or dancefloors of seminal club nights, or at the counters of record stores fighting over the last copy of an in demand 12” or are even introduced to each other by other iconic artists - https://soundcloud.com/atella's Magnus and Johannes met during a piggyback race. This unlikely if fortuitous scenario seems to sum up the Norwegian duo and their incredible sense of humour. There’s an impish sense of both fun and imagination to their work that matches frisky electronics to gently uplifting atmospheres. For their new cut, ‘Closer To Life’, Atella have joined forces with singer Frøder, recently cited by Nylon as one of Norway’s most promising new artists, to deliver a track that can stand proudly amongst the output of fellow Bergen natives Röyksopp or Lindstrøm (whom they have remixed).

Atella explain: “Closer To Life is the result of the good friendship we have with the amazing artist Frøder. The song is an atmospheric reflection of our world’s unstable and chaotic journey through the universe. Close To Life is the sequel (or prequel - who knows?!) to Closer To Life. A targeted journey through time and space, and the search for extraterrestrial and/or intelligent lifeforms - are we getting closer? We can feel it.”  

Atella made their debut on Eskimo with ‘The Monster’ back in 2014, a track that featured in ‘Scream’ (the TV series spin off from the film trilogy) and was heavily supported by scores of DJs including the legendary Busy P. Their previous single ‘Mechanical Sparrow’ featured O. Martin on vocals (the musical ally of Aurora) and they’ve recently worked with or remixed the likes of Ary, Dagny and Bow To Each Other, who won the Norwegian Grammy Award for pop band of the year. Get ready for the Nordic invasion.
