On first listen Iggy Pop's Lust for Life doesn't sound particularly original. The drumbeat a lift of You Can't Hurry Love and the layers of additional percussion suggest the Stones' Sympathy for the Devil.

So what's the secret of this rock classic? In short, Iggy Pop's lyrics and performance. There's something joyously lunatic about the ecstatic delivery that propels the song along at super high speed.

Me and Hideo rock-in' it out, good old spontaneous jam style, in fun-fun-fun mode. Nothing's better than a live jam...I l-i-v-e for it! In case you might be wondering, the far off distant psychedelic vocals are in fact deliberate...I tried to create the picture that we are up in the cosmic realm among the planets and stars jamming it up oh so blissfully, trying to please the Gods, the universe and all who dwell within. We are physically so far away from one another yet spiritually, we are so near and ready...ready to give you the instant magical vibrational feeling. At least we hope we're doing that. The intox-hypno-trance vocals are actually me telling Hideo how excited I am to be jamming with him....jamming to his super charged up kit-percussion! From the first moment I heard Hideo play his drums, I was completely gone as in stoned out of my mind. Long before September 11, 2001, there was a September 11, 1950; the birthdate of my wife Terry.  This song started out as a very personal musical portrait of her.  Debra became interested in the track after I sent it to her for collaborative consideration.  The result is something very special for the both of us and we hope you too.  In my playing, I address the intimate side of the song and day. In Debra's playing, she addresses the now much larger meaning of the day for our nation and the world. Ultimately I think what we are saying is that 9/11 is profoundly personal. Each of us, if were old enough to remember, know where we were, what we were doing the day the attacks occurred. The attacks also shook the world, world markets, world travel, and any and all sense of security.   Profound sorrow was draped over our country and any nation that called us friend.  "Stay With Me" is another way of saying "hold me close", "we need each other", and as the track picture suggests "forget me not".    A big "thank you" to Debra for lavishing her talent on this very personal song.    More of her beautiful music can be heard @debra_buesking.
