The first instalment of a brand new audio-essay of Kodwo Eshun’s 1998 book ‘More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction’. Much sought after since it’s initial publication, ‘More Brilliant’ was a concerted attempt to change the relationship between writing and music. 

Throughout the work, which is situated between electronic music history, media theory, science fiction and Afrodiasporic studies, Eshun constructs an alternative (non-linear) timeline of 20th century music, traversing jazz, dub, techno, funk, hip-hop and jungle. 

The text mobilises what Eshun sees as the theoretical tendencies inherent to the output of artists such as Sun Ra, Lee Perry, Ramellzee, Funkadelic, 4hero and The Jungle Brothers, and open the possibilities of sonic fiction: the hitherto unexplored intersections between science fiction and organised sound.

really grateful to be sharing this mix from Mishti. it feels really suited to bringing sludge back after a few months peaced out. such a strong piece of music that has had a lot of thought and love poured into it.

we met last year when both of us played at ormside projects (💗) and i was blown away by his set fusing drill and hitek club sonix. having released on tt, he now co runs the event wishfufilment, and recently brought members of the incred jokkoo collective to play at ormside (love that place)

this mix worms down a totally differnt path though, blowing out any remnants of the club and opening up into smthg totally spectral. melting thru dense ambient and trancing arcs into crustteddd noise and floating drummy sections, he covers so much ground in all too short a time

from levity to gravity and back again, all frayed out

this one deserves a proper listen

Dear dearest, I’m back at my seat. I’ve been thrown around the past few months, since the last time we spoke. Judgement, too, was thrown at me. It came at the end, as it does. A spirit levitating from its coffin. I saw the world was just a magnetic disk, and a coin propelled forth changed direction based on a multiplicity of poles. We danced around the pole as far as I remember, but what I remember most was the skirting of extra skin hanging around the mouth. The way it simultaneously pushed forward and fell to a limp curtain. My neighbor’s curtain opens every night at 03:00. They’ve switched from humbleness to ambition. I reconnected with my analyst. She asked me which is crazier, constraint or vigor. I balance the both like cold schüss sitting on hot wine. My insides melted and rearranged. Zauberstab blending the heart. Placed into the earth under letters to the spirits and spit. The head was in a rabbit hole. It followed back and flipped forward. All the rabbits are active now. I float three years back in time again, remembering the same. Have I learned anything through all of this time? Probably a lot, but I think you don’t want to hear that right now. You want to find the wisdom in your head, but you’re pulled by the attachments of the heart. My analyst said everyone is crazy, because everyone is doing this very same thing. They said they felt themself at one point, but the feeling popped. Pop pop pop. A well-dressed baby told me Pop is hard to write. Pop is hard to reproduce. It’s easier to make things crash. So here we come crashing - Happy New Year.
