The Meaning Of… what, I wonder. Life? Art? The shifting patterns of the cosmos? Perhaps the truth is more mundane, and sounds this grand and enveloping and extraterrestrial accompany Inhmost’s everyday musings, but I suspect he was alluding to the big questions when he put that title on his new LP.

Inhmost is Simon Huxtable. He first gained traction in the late 90s as Aural Imbalance, putting out a series of fleet-footed intelligent D n B singles that’ll now set you back a fair wedge on Discogs. Since then he’s gradually stripped his sound of the drum and (most of) the bass, and Inhmost now serves as Huxtable’s outlet for his most distilled and chasmic ambient. This is his fourth album under the moniker and his first on Swiss imprint re:st, a label whose output sits neatly amid the same sonics as Huxtable’s, encompassing the minimal percussive workouts of DB1 and Dyl, spacious techno and half-step from Lcp, and dub-skewed, dancefloor-adjacent excursions by Owl.

Scenic, is I think the word that best describes The Meaning Of… The opener sounds like a rainy walk below a neon moon, with gliding synths and fuzzed, drizzling water sounds. On ‘Outside Space’, rustling field recordings evoke a dazed mooch around a misty jungle, one where you stumble across an end-stage forest rave that’s blasting Global Communication’s 76:14 until everyone leaves. ‘Outer Thoughts Dub’, if not the most transportive track here, is the most pleasing to my ears. Fireside crackles and cosmic twinkles are carried upward by a feathersoft pulse, compelling you to look out into the beyond while retaining the warmth and intimacy of your favourite duvet.

The kicker with this album is the deceptive ease with which Huxtable melds the organic and synthetic. It almost makes you want to give it a go yourself; just grab a field mic and strike off into the night, take the fruits of your labour home and mush it together with some warm electronics. But no, there’s much more at play here. With all the elements involved it could easily spill over into a crowded, trite, Eno-goes-hiking soundtrack. Instead, Inhmost strikes a delicate balance, offering up densely layered, vertiginous arrangements that manage to remain light as aether.

In the end, I think The Meaning Of… lives up to the lofty implications of its title. While it might not reveal the truth of existence, or provide solutions to the crushing complexities of day-to-day living, it does allow you to escape into glistening worlds where those questions seem just a little less pressing. And for now, I think that’s more than enough.

For the newest Animix, Thailand based DJ & producer @sunjuhargun has put together a beautiful downtempo trance exploration. Sunju co-curates @siamesetwinsrecords , an amazing label which focuses on trance-y, psychedelic sounds from Asian based artists. 

Sunju has a multitude of impressive releases under his name, as well as aliases Mogambo and Khun Fluff, and a plethora of beautiful mixes - which always seem to find the perfect balance between emotional and driving. Sunju has been a household name across the region for over a decade, playing spaced out music in forests, warehouses, and castles.

The EP starts with Get Into the Moment, providing deep psychedelic soundscapes, supported by a driving groovy bassline that sets the mood for the EP.Next up is the title track, You'll Lose. Providing a higher energy, hypnotic techno cut that shows her full spectrum of skill with it's great combination of sounds and vocals. Next is the dance floor bomb, Sky, which is a powerful, bass heavy, yet deep techno cut again that will drive the audience to the dance floor. The first remix of You'll Lose is by Madrid based Irazu. Having released on Semantica, Kastil's label Stale, as well as In Silent Series, he brings his deep yet powerful style to this great remix of You'll Lose. Portuguese multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Pedro Ricardo releases his debut album, ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’, on Soundway Records.

Currently based in Berlin, Pedro Ricardo has been releasing music for the past eight years under dierent aliases via labels such as Extended Records, 1980Lyfers, Wolf Music and his own imprints Hear, Sense and Feel and Pedro’s House. An eclectic DJ and selector, he hosts a radio show on South London's radio Balamii, guested on Mafalda's NTS show and can be found playing in clubs across all Europe.

“The album translates to ‘Good Winds Blow’, shares Ricardo. “This idea of good winds blowing is intertwined with the feeling of missing something, and sadness. On a positive note, there is still an overarching sense that happiness also lies ahead. Soprem Bons Ventos represents an ode to the past, to those who came before me, connecting with my present and imagining the future.”

Stylistically, Ricardo became entranced with jazz from an early age, while also becoming enamoured with folk music – rooted in his Portugal childhood, now encompassing sounds from Cape Verde, Brazil, and Spain along the way. He intertwines these instrumental in#uences with $eld recordings, and electronics, on ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’.

While ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’ sonic beginnings were conjured in his native city of Porto, the album’s creative process spanned four countries and $ve years. Ricardo initially recorded early demos in Portugal, before he criss-crossed through Europe.
However, it was a move to Wood Green (London) in 2019 that ignited a creative spark that brought the album together. “This album has been following me around for the past $ve years,” shares Ricardo. “Wherever I went, it came along... but the majority of the recording process came alive in London.”

“The city had a particular eect on me. There are so many people doing so many exciting things, you have to ask yourself, ‘what makes the thing you are creating your own?’ This record has a lot of personal sonic moments like that. That is not to say that I found ‘my sound’, but rather that I found something that I think is special, and truly represents me now.
     
“The years when I was making the record also coincide with me moving away from Portugal, away from home – this feeling is very much present during the record. You can hear it.”

Whether in his birthplace or newly adopted cities, as its title suggests, Good Winds Blow throughout the album’s 9-tracks. The LP is a journey that encompasses nostalgia, love, longing, and togetherness, tenderly intertwined throughout with vibrant percussion, whispers of vocals, soaring keys, and delicate guitars.

A soft downtempo mix from one of NYC's finest techno DJs. In a post-pandemic New York that has witnessed an explosion of new talent, Emma Olson, who goes by Umfang, is by now a recognized veteran who is well-respected for her fluency in techno – and not just as a DJ, but also as someone engaged with its political history and contemporary social contexts. Her psychedelic all-vinyl sets move the body AND mind and are proof that the true skill of the DJ isn’t necessarily what one plays, but how.

“I have been wanting to make a slower mix for a long time which is hilariously challenging for me coming from mostly playing techno,” says Umfang. “I make subdued sparse music and have had a difficult time closing the gap between soundscapes I'm drawn to and the music I play in the club.” 

The result is the sound of a bridge. “This is a reflection of some intentional digging for downtempo, a desire to feature the music my friends are making now that excites me, and the one-off ambient tracks from techno artists that often don't find a place in the club.” Considering these new tempos and textures, the variety here is cohesive, and it also feels intimate — the sound of an artist earnestly building out new comfort zones.

Self Luv is a project in dedication to the human spirit. This project was meant to be a blank canvas for each artist to show their unique form of creative luv - with the only commonality being the vocal. 

Artists from all around worked together to make this one happen - Puerto Rico, Romania, Toronto, Dominican Republic, Detroit, and St. Petersburg (USA).
